Augustana Women's Basketball Ready For Second Straight Road Trip

Vikings travel to Marshall on Friday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Riding a nine-game win streak, the No. 13 Augustana women's basketball team starts their 2019 calendar year with a pair of Northern Sun Conference matchups on the road. On Friday, the Vikings take on the Mustangs from Southwest Minnesota State University at 5:30 p.m. and are back in action on Saturday at the University of Sioux Falls for a 4 p.m. tip-off. Friday's game vs. Southwest Minnesota State will be broadcast live on Midco Sports Network with David Brown (PxP) and Brad Newitt (color) on the call.

Augustana (14-1, 6-0 NSIC) rolls into this weekend playing their best basketball of the season. The Vikings, who haven't lost since in nearly six weeks, most recently picked up a 14-point victory over Wayne State on Sunday. In the 88-74 win, five student-athletes notched double-digits in the scoring column and had nine scorers overall. The Vikings, who are averaging 83 points during their nine-game win streak, hold first place in the NSIC South.

Following the holiday break, the Vikings have moved into first place in numerous categories in the conference and the national rankings. Augustana leads the NSIC and the nation in total rebounds, pulling down a total of 697. Augustana also dishes out 18 assists per contest, which sits them in the No. 1 spot in the NSIC and nation, too.

As a team, the Vikings find a chunk of their success in their tenacious defense. Augustana averages 12.1 steals per game, which is second in the national rankings, as well as first in the NSIC. The turnovers they force teams into has turned into offense - the Vikings average 23 points per game off of turnovers.

The Vikings come into the weekend averaging just over 83 points per game, while shooting an impressive 44.7% from the field. In the conference, Augustana is seated No. 1 in scoring, scoring margin (23.3), 3-pointers made (148 / 9.9 per game), rebounds (45 per game), blocked shots (4.47 per game), and steals with 11.53 per game.

Senior Shelby Selland is having a show out farewell tour as well. The center is averaging 16 points per game as well as 7 rebounds per contest, which leads the Vikings in both categories. The 6-2 center has garnered NSIC South Player of the Week twice this season and has received the award three times over the course of her career. The Vikings also have three other players averaging double-figures this season. Averaging 12.5 ppg is Lynsey Prosser, while Vishe' Rabb drops 11.2 a game, and Abby Hora 11.1.

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State University:
• SMSU is led by third-year head coach, Tom Webb.
• SMSU comes into this conference matchup 5-6 (2-4 NSIC) after the holiday break.
• Overall, they are shooting 38.2 percent as a team from the field (256-671).
• The Mustangs are averaging 69.2 points per game through 11 games while giving up 69.5 points per contest.
• SMSU is led by junior Caleigh Rodning. Rodning is averaging 15.6 ppg in 24 minutes of play.

Scouting the University of Sioux Falls:
• USF is led by 11th-year head coach, Travis Traphagen.
• Coach Traphagen recently picked up his 200th career win vs. Concordia-St. Paul on Dec. 7, 2018.
• USF comes into this conference matchup 8-4 (3-3 NSIC) after the holiday break.
• Overall, they are shooting 30.2 percent as a team from the field (320-783).
• The Cougars are averaging 72.5 points per game through 12 games while holding opponents to 57.1 points per contest.
• USF is led by Kaely Hummel. Hummel is averaging 15.8 ppg in 25 minutes of play.
