Augustana Track and Field Opens Season at SDSU Holiday Open

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana track and field teams begin their indoor seasons this weekend at the SDSU Holiday Open in Brookings, South Dakota.

The Event
South Dakota State will host the event at the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings on Friday Dec. 6 and Saturday Dec. 7. The first event is scheduled to begin at noon on Friday with the day's last event starting at 8:15 p.m. On Saturday, events will start at 11 a.m. and end at 1:40 p.m. Click here for the full schedule and here for a parking map. 

The Women
Last season, the Vikings finished their indoor track and field season third in the NSIC and 21st nationally. Augustana has added eight newcomers to the 2019-20 squad and returns 37 athletes, including five seniors. 

Of the seniors, Augustana returns Olivia Montez Brown who won the National Championship in the pentathlon. Brown broke the school record for pentathlon points (3,915) and became Augustana's sixth women's individual track and field champion. 

The Men
Last season, the Vikings finished their indoor track and field season fifth in the NSIC. The men have added 12 freshmen to their 2019-20 roster and return 26 athletes, including 11 seniors. 

At the NSIC Championships last season, now-sophomore Tyl Woelber turned in an impressive fourth-place finish in the heptathlon while now-junior Ryan Sully finished sixth in the 400m.

Now-senior Aaron Runge, coming off an All-America cross country performance, leads the Vikings in distance events. Runge finished in third-place in the 5000m last season at the NSIC Championships with a time of 14:50.79

One Last Thing
Several members of the Augustana cross country national teams will also be competing in the 5000m at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic this weekend. The event is hosted by Northwest Missouri in Maryville, Missouri, at the Hughes Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday.
