Throughout Spring volleyball, GoAugie.com will take a look at the various position groups. The third installment of the Spring Report focuses on the setters position.

The Augustana volleyball team returns two from its setters position last year. Sophomore Avery Thorson returns after seeing significant time on the court as a freshman last season. The other returner is redshirt-junior Jessica Simon who is coming of an injury that forced her to miss all of the 2018 season.

"We have two setters returning this fall," head coach Jen Jacobs said. "Redshirt-junior Jessica Simon, who is coming of an injury all of the 2018 season, has returned to the court as well as sophomore Avery Thorson who saw significant playing time this past fall."

The Sioux Falls, S.D. native, Thorson helped the Vikings to compile 100 service aces which was fourth in the NSIC last season. The former Harrisburg Tiger returns with the most service aces in 27 and a team-high 962 assists last season. The sophomore stepped up on the defensive side as well hauling in 22 blocks on the season which was fifth and chipped in with 207 digs. Thorson will be a key part of both the offense and defense this upcoming season.

Simon is coming off an injury that sidelined her the whole 2018 season and is looking to get back on the court. The Joliet, Ill. native, is a lefty hitter who has a great knowledge of the game of volleyball and will bring in experience and leadership. The redshirt-junior is a dual threat for the Vikings at the net, she's able to set up teammates and then turn around and become a hitter herself when she is in the front row.

"Our main focus this Spring was controlling the tempo of our offense and literally 'setting the tone,'" Jacobs said. "Both of these players have unique abilities they each bring to the court and looking forward to this fall to see what they can do!"

The fourth and final part of the Spring Report features the libero's and the defensive specialist and will be available on Friday.
