SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- "When I stepped on campus, I fell in love." The response from senior student-athlete Rebecca Falkner on why she decided to come to Augustana.
Falkner, a Kansas City, Missouri, native, visited Augustana the fall of her senior year of high school, although she had offers elsewhere, she decided to give Augustana a visit.
She was taken to an anatomy class that former tennis student-athletes Christine Olivo and Kaitlyn Schultz had.
"I liked the small class size and how the professor interacted with every student," Falkner said "She wanted to make sure that everyone truly understood the material before moving on to the next lesson."
Although Falkner saw what she needed from an academic standpoint, she knew that she had aspirations of being a student-athlete as well.
She was welcomed by the team to the Morrison Commons for lunch on her visit.
"Hearing how much they enjoyed the school and knowing the winning tradition of Augie's tennis team really sealed the deal for me," she added.
Falkner liked the facilities that were offered for her sport with Huether Tennis Centre on campus and GreatLIFE as well.
Having a good experience in the classroom and a welcoming visit from the team, Falkner met with head coach Marc Kurtz.
"I immediately connected with Coach Kurtz, he reminded me of a few coaches back in Kansas City," Falkner said. "I liked his competitive mindset and energy. He is very engaging during practices and matches."
Although Coach Kurtz is an expert in his craft, he also understands the importance of developing outstanding citizens in the community and the importance of getting a good education while at Augustana.
"Coach Kurtz is also very supportive off the court and wants to see each of his players succeed in college and beyond," she said. "He pushes you to be your best on the court and in the classroom."
Falkner also couldn't speak more highly of the professors and administrators at Augustana.
"I love their open-door policy," she said when referring to the professors and staff at Augustana "Anytime I have a question or need to talk, I can go to their office and we can just sit and chat."
Being a fifth year senior, Falkner has had a few professors multiple times to help build a connection with them.
"When the season was cancelled last spring due to COVID-19, a few professors reached out to me just to check-in. The same goes for the athletic administrators and coaches." Falkner added.
Falkner obtained her bachelor's degree last spring in sport management and will finish her masters in sport administration and leadership this coming May.
"Although I am excited to begin my future I will miss this campus so much come May."
