SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- "I was drawn to Augustana because our community encourages true excellence in all fields of life." The quick response from sophomore cross country and track & field student-athlete Colten Brand on why he chose Augustana.

When it came time for Brand, a Winona, Minnesota, native to look at colleges to continue his running and academic careers, Augustana was high on his list. 

"When visiting as a high school senior, it was clear to me that the cross country team encouraged both academic and athletic excellence, which was important to me," Brand said.

From his visit Brand was able to tell that Augustana was the place he was searching for.

"Augie is a place where I could foster life-long friendships, but still be challenged by the wide array of classes suited to my needs," Brand added.

It was easy for Brand to see that there was something different about Augustana that put it in a class of its own. Brand was more specifically drawn to the culture of both Augustana University and that of the cross country and track & field teams. 

"Immediately after stepping onto this campus for the first time, I knew there were people who would help me reach new heights in both academics and athletics," Brand added.

Brand was also encouraged by the academics that Augustana had to offer.

"As a student here, I know that Augustana's professors intellectually challenge everyone who enters, ultimately striving to create a community of learners and future leaders," Brand said.

Brand also attributes the Augustana cross country and track & field family for his continual growth at Augustana.

"As an athlete, my coaches and fellow teammates push me to be the best person I can be," Brand said. "It becomes ever important when these two lives intertwine with each other."

Brand was able to find a college that would help him long past his years in college.

"With the determination that my running coaches bring out in me, the rigorous academic experience at Augustana is enhanced even more.

Every day I am at Augie I am reminded of why I chose to come here."
