Augustana Track and Field With Strong Showing at NSIC Challenge

Vikings take home six titles on the weekend

MANKATO, Minn. -- The Augustana track and field teams showed dominance in several events this weekend at the SDSU Indoor Classic in Brookings, South Dakota, and NSIC Challenge in Mankato, Minnesota. 

The Women
The Vikings wasted no time in getting off to a strong start this weekend as the women dominated the 3,000m Friday night in Brookings. Led by Nicolette Schmidt's first-place finish and NCAA provisional mark, the Vikings swept the podium and claimed eight of the first 15 finishers, including seven personal bests. 

The aforementioned Schmidt ran a personal best time of 9:57.93, Patty Jo English took second with a personal best time of 9:59.31, Rachel Rairdon placed third with a personal best time of  10:09.51, Mia Salas placed fifth with a personal best time of 10:10.08, Rebekah Rairdon took sixth with a personal best time of 10:10.73 and Alana Sesow finished in seventh with a time of 10:29.81 giving the Vikings six of the top-10 spots. Ana McCabe and Cami Streff placed 11th and 15th in the event with personal best times of 10:40.51 and 10:51.36, respectively. 

On Saturday in Mankato, the women took home first-place finishes in the 600m, 60m hurdles and 800m.

In the 600m, Sydney Mudgett took home first-place for Augustana with a time of 1:37.37. Kaitlyn Mulder followed with a fourth-place finish (1:39.12) along with Maria Hoogendorn in seventh-place (1:40.48).

In the 60m hurdles, Olivia Montez Brown took home first-place with a time of 8.79. Elizabeth Schaefer followed close behind, finishing in second with a time of 8.84. Kaye Paschka also placed seventh in the event with a time of 9.17.

The Vikings placed three in the top-seven once more in the 800m. Carly Rahn led the way for the Vikings, finishing in first-place with a time of 2:13.21 followed by Emily Tromp in fifth and Kali Ryan in seventh with times of 2:16.38 and 2:18.87, respectively. 

Other top performances for the women included Olivia Montez Brown's second-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.61m (18-4.75), Callin Naddy's third place finish in the mile with a time of 5:06.96, Kendra Ludeman's third place finish in the high jump with a height of 1.62m (5-3.75) and Callie DeWitt's fifth place finish in the 60m with a time of 7.75. 

The Men
Augustana swept the podium and claimed five of the top-six spots in the 800m on Saturday. Austin Miller led the way, placing first with a time of 1:53.29 while Tiegen Lindner and Bonheur Mvuyekure took home second and third with times of 1:56.03 and 1:56.79, respectively. Evan Johnson followed with a fifth place finish (1:58.38) and Jesus Urtusuastegui took sixth with a time of 1:59.09.

A week after winning a heptathlon, Tyl Woelber took home another first-place title, winning the triple jump on Saturday with a distance of 14.49m (47-6.5). Connor Clayton had a strong showing in the triple jump as well, finishing in eighth with a distance of 13.41m (43-12). 

The men also dominated the mile, taking five of the top-eight spots, with all five times being personal bests. Evan Johnson took second-place with a time of 4:14.52, Jesus Urtusuastegui took third-place with a time of 4:16.47, Aaron Runge took fourth-place with a time of 4:20.00, Endre Wigaard took sixth-place with a time of 4:22.24 and Alec Kray finished in eight-place with a time of 4:22.96. 

Other top performances for the men included Tyl Woelber and Lawrence Lokonobei's second and third-place performances in the 60m hurdles. Both athletes ran personal bests, Woelber with a 8.30 and Lokonobei with a 8.35. Stig Selnes took fourth-place in the shot put with a distance of 14.72m (48-3.5), Matt Pohlmann also took fourth-place in the pole vault with a height of 4.45m (14-7.25) and Kenneth Griffin finished in seventh-place in the 60m with a personal best time of 7.15.
