Woelber Wins Heptathlon for Vikings Track and Field at NDSU Bison Open

FARGO, N.D. -- The Augustana track and field teams continued to show flashes of brilliance at the NDSU Bison Open in Fargo, North Dakota, this weekend. Tyl Woelber led the Viking men with a first-place finish in the heptathlon while the Augustana women swept the podium in the 3,000 meter race and dominated the 800 meter race.

The Men
The aforementioned Woelber had a monster weekend for the Vikings and won the heptathlon with a personal record 5,235 points, just one point ahead of the second-place finisher. Woelber's score also placed him at 10th on the NCAA Division II standings for heptathlon scores. 

Woelber won the heptathlon with a first-place finish in the 60 meter dash (7.18), third-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 6.88m (22-7), third place finish in the shot put with a distance of 12.86m (42-2.25), first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 2.04m (6-8.25), first-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (8.43), 13th-place finish in the pole vault with a height of 3.65m (11-11.75) and fifth-place finish in the 1,000m (2:53.17).

The men also dominated the 3,000-meter race, led by Jesus Urtusuastegui who finished in third-place with a time of 8:36.23. Aaron Runge and Alec Kray followed Urtusuastegui and took home fourth and fifth place with times of 8:36.96 and 8:39.63, respectively. Kray Person also finished top-10 in the event with a ninth-place finish with a time of 8:59.15.

In the 1,000-meter race, Augustana claimed three of the top-six spots as Evan Johnson took second-place (2:30.96), Tiegen Lindner took third-place with a personal best time of 2:31.31 and Jesus Urtusuastegui took sixth-place with a personal best time of 2:33.32.

Other top performances for the men included Lawrence Lokonobei's second-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.38, Matt Pohlmann's third-place tie in the pole vault with a height of 4.36m (36-2) and Connor Clayton's fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 13.48m (44-2.75). 

The Women
Nicolette Schmidt led the Viking women in their podium sweep of the 3,000-meter race with a first-place finish and a personal best time of 10:08.10. Claire Boersma claimed second-place in the race with a time of 10:10.99 and Rebekah Rairdon took third-place with a time of 10:13.99. Two more Vikings placed in the top-10 in the event as Rachel Rairdon took fifth-place with a time of 10:16.59 and Elizabeth Yoder took 10th-place with a time of 10:42.81. 

Augustana also dominated the 800 meter, claiming the top two spots and five spots in the top ten. Carly Rahn led the way with first-place honors and a time of 2:16.14. Emily Tromp took second-place with a time of 2:17.00 and Callin Naddy took fifth-place with a time of 2:19.19. The other top-10 finishers included Kali Ryan and Haylee Waterfall in sixth and ninth-place with times of 2:19.52 and 2:23.32, respectively. 

Other top performances for the women included Sydney Mudgett's second-place finish in the 600-meter race with a personal best time of 1:36.72, good for second in the NSIC, Olivia Montez Brown's fourth-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles (8.97), Callie DeWitt's third-place finish in the 60 meter dash (7.75) and third-place finish in the 200 meter race (25.64), Mearah Miedema's third-place finish in the high jump with a distance of 1.63m (5-4.25) and Kaly Banks' fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 11.02m (36-2).
