Women’s Basketball Opens Conference Play Hosting Minnesota State at Sanford Pentagon

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana women's basketball team returns to the Sanford Pentagon for the first time this season hosting Minnesota State on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's game is slated for an 8 p.m. start while Sunday will begin at 4 p.m.

Tickets will go on sale to the public Friday at 10 a.m. and be available online at GoAugie.com/tickets, Ticketmaster.com, by phone and in person at the Sanford Pentagon box office. The Pentagon box office is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and one hour prior to tipoff of games. 

About The Vikings

The Vikings started the 2021 season splitting with MSU Moorhead with an 83-65 victory on Jan. 2 and narrowly fell this past Sunday by five points. 

In its short season, Augustana has already seen a wide range of scoring options. The Vikings had all five starters in the first contest of the season score at least 10 points.

Sophomore Aislinn Duffy reached a new career-high in points with 20 on opening night. The following night, senior Izzy Van Veldhuizen had her own career night, also getting a 20 piece.

Senior Hannah Mitby leads the team in rebounds, averaging 4.5 over the first two games. Mitby, the runner-up to the steals crown in the league last year, also leads the team in steals with five on the season which currently ranks fourth in the conference. 

About The Mavericks

The Mavericks, the NSIC South Division preseason favorite, started their season with a win and a loss against Bemidji State last week and is led by eighth-year head coach Emilee Thiesse.

The Mavericks won their season opener in a tight game, 63-62, where Rachel Shumski recorded 12 points and eight rebounds. The second game went into overtime with Joey Batt scoring 26 but saw Bemidji State pull away in an 82-76 victory. 

Minnesota State was tabbed first in the preseason NSIC Coaches' Poll with 43 points and three first-place votes. Tayla Stuttley was selected as the Player to Watch after leading the Mavericks in 3-pointers made the last two seasons along with leading the team in assists last year.

One Last Thing

The Vikings are currently ranked first in 3-point field goals made in the conference with 19. Van Veldhuizen leads Augustana with six made 3-pointers, followed closely by Duffy with five of her own. Van Veldhuizen, a senior, made four of her six treys during her career-high 20 points this past Sunday.
