South Division Title on Line as Augustana Women’s Basketball Travels to Wayne State

2/18/2021 11:03:00 AM

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana women's basketball team returns to the road to conclude the regular season with a weekend of games in Wayne, Nebraska. Friday's game is slated for 6:30 p.m. while Saturday's tipoff is at 2:30 p.m.

A win on Friday grants the Vikings a berth in the NSIC tournament while a weekend sweep would give the Vikings the NSIC South Division Championship. In 2021, the NSIC is only awarding division championships as opposed to an overall champion.

About The Vikings

Augustana is coming off a sweep against Sioux Falls last weekend. The Vikings are now 9-4 overall and 8-3 in the NSIC. On Wednesday, AU was announced as one of eight teams under consideration for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

This past Friday night, the Vikings shot 49.2 from the field and had a big night from bench players, recording 21 of the 76 points to elevate Augustana to a 76-68 win.

The victory also secured head coach Dave Krauth's 1,000th combined high school and collegiate wins.

In Saturday's 80-74 win against Sioux Falls, senior Hannah Mitby was two assists shy of a triple-double. Along with tying her career-high in points with 23, she also grabbed 10 rebounds.

The team also made 13 3-pointers with senior Izzy Van Veldhuizen cashing in on five and sophomore Lauren Sees hitting four of her own.

Mitby's performances over the weekend made her the clear favorite for the NSIC South Division Player of the Week, which she was honored with on Monday.

Sees leads the team in points with 14.5 per game while sophomore Aislinn Duffy leads in rebounds with 6.5 per contest.

About The Wildcats

Wayne State is 6-8 overall and 5-7 within the conference. The Wildcats are led by third-year head coach Brent Pollari.

Last week, Wayne State split against SMSU with a win Friday night, 74-60, and a blowout loss Saturday afternoon, 85-49.

On Friday, the Wildcats had two players with at least 20 points with Halley Busse and Erin Norling scoring 28 and 25 points, respectively.

Norling leads the Wildcats in scoring with 16.1 points per game and rebounds with 7.3 per contest.

One Last Thing

If Augustana pulls off the sweep this weekend, it will win the NSIC South Division outright. It would be the second time laying claim to an NSIC Championship. The Vikings also won the NSIC in 2018.
