Tanner Brown Tosses Perfect Game Against Minot State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Junior southpaw Tanner Brown was perfect in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with the Beavers of Minot State. Brown retired all 21 hitters he faced, 11 by strikeout, as the Vikings took game one 4-0. Augustana fell in game two, 8-5.

Brown's perfect game on Saturday was the second in Augustana history. Ross Hawley twirled the last perfecto on March 12, 2000, in a 1-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.

Game One
Brown was electric all day, starting with the first pitch, as he struck out the first six hitters that he faced, four swinging and two looking.

After a quiet third inning, Brown received some help from his defense in the top of the fourth. With one out, first baseman Christian Kuzemka robbed Minot State's Drew Behling of a single with a full-extension dive down the right-field line. Kuzemka fielded the ground ball, sprung up and stepped on first to make the unassisted play. Brown capped the inning off after inducing a flyout to right.

In the bottom half of the inning, Augustana provided Brown with some run support. With one out, junior infielder Jordan Barth smoked a double over the center fielder's head. Senior outfielder Riley Johnson followed Barth with a frozen-rope RBI triple in the left-center gap. Johnson then came around to score on an infield single from senior shortstop Sam Baier

Up 2-0, Brown cruised through the fifth inning, before receiving some more support from his offense in the bottom half of the frame.

With one out, junior catcher Will Olson doubled down the left field line. Two batters later, sophomore outfielder Carter Howell launched a two-run homer to left-center to put the Vikings up 4-0.

In the top of the sixth, Brown induced a flyout to right and struck a hitter out for the first two outs. Kuzemka then made a nice sliding catch in foul territory to record the third out, preserving the opportunity for history in the top half of the seventh.

Three outs away from perfection, Minot State's Declan Buckle grounded a ball to the right side to start off the seventh. Kuzemka snared the grounder, set his feet and tossed the ball to Brown covering the bag for the first out of the inning. After a swinging strikeout, Brown stood just one out away from perfection.

Minot State's Jackson Pokorney stepped up to the plate and on the first pitch of the at-bat, he sent a soft blooper to the right side of the infield. With a sense of urgency, junior infielder JT Mix rushed to the slow grounder, fielded it on a hop, executed a quick transition and fired to first for the final out of the game to complete Tanner Brown's perfect game with a phenomenal play.

Brown's teammates rushed out of the dugout, mobbing him just behind the pitcher's mound.

"It was awesome," said Brown. "It was super fun being able to celebrate with my team after the win. I have no words to describe it. It sounds perfect."

Brown's final stat line read seven innings with no runs, no hits, no walks and 11 strikeouts.

Game Two
Game two featured a much different script than game one with some high scoring, back-and-forth action.

The teams played longball early as Minot State took an early 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. The Vikings took back the lead in the bottom of the second with back-to-back home runs from Kuzemka and junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz. For Kuzemka, it was his first homer in a Viking uniform while Rosencranz launched his second of the young season.

The Beavers tied the game 3-3 in the top of the fifth with a couple of RBI singles. Augustana took a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the frame on an RBI double off the bat of Barth.

The Beavers tied things up in the top of the sixth, before Augustana took the lead once again in the bottom of the seventh. After Howell and Mix singled with one out, the Vikings scored on an error by the Minot shortstop, moving the score to 5-4.

Things unraveled for the Vikings in the top half of the eighth inning. After a single, hit-by-pitch and a couple of outs, Minot State's Ryley Humrighouse hit a three-run homer to give the Beavers a 7-5 lead.

In the top of the ninth, Minot tacked on another run to push the score to 8-5. The Vikings went scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, giving the Beavers the victory.
