UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – Pedro Borin swam an NCAA 'B' Standard time to win Augustana men's swimming and diving first individual GLIAC championship in the 200 fly Sunday in University Center, Michigan.
Borin would qualify for the 200 fly finals by placing third in the prelims with a time of 1:50.82. He then went on to win the finals of the event with a time of 1:47.79. He touched the wall in a person-best time by over three seconds.
"It was a day to remember for our men's team," Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko said. "We had someone make the finals in every event and finished with our first GLIAC Champion. I'm so proud of how well we are competing in one of the nation's best NCAA Division II conferences."
In the 200 yard fly finals was Lui Pinto who placed 12th with a time of 1:52.87. Earlier in the day,with the preliminaires saw Pinto swim a time of 1:53.71. Kacper Mayberg placed 10th in the finals with a time of 1:52.39, which was an improvement from his preliminary time of 1:53.30.
Pinto and Steven Asmus started Sunday as the first Vikings to qualify for finals on the day in the 500 free, the first event of the day. During the finals Asmus placed 15th with a time of 4:42.55 and Pinto swam a time of 4:43.21. During the preliminaries, Pinto swam a time of 4:41.20, while Asums swam a time of 4:41.27.
Jackson Dircks would then swim a time of 51.61 in the 100 back to finish 12th and qualify for the finals for the Vikings. Dircks improved his time in the finals, finishing 11th with a time of 51.14.
During the 100 breaststroke, Mason Kauffeld would make his third final of the GLIAC Championships. Kauffeld swam a time of 58.05 and placed 13th. He improved his time in the finals placing 11th with a 57.46 time.
To cap off day three, the Vikings 800 yard relay team, consisting of Borin, Dircks, Luis Aguilar Delgado, Pinto, finished fifth with a time of 6:55.42, which was a personal best for the team.
The Vikings will be back in action Monday for the final day of the GLIAC Championships beginning at 9 a.m. and finals beginning at 4:30 p.m. Action can be followed at GoAugie.com/Live.
