WINONA, Minn.--Augustana baseball defeated the Winona State Warriors in a doubleheader on Thursday. The Viking's record improves to 31-7-1 overall and 21-4 in NSIC action. The Warriors drop to 9-20 overall and 7-10 in conference play.Â
Game One: Augustana 3, Winona State 2
Seth Miller got the start on the mound for the Vikings, pitching 4.1 innings. Miller, the reigning NSIC Pitcher of the Week, struck out seven batters to earn the win and move to a record of 5-1. Caleb Kranz took over on the mound and logged 2.2 innings, recording three strikeouts.
Will Olson started the scoring for Augustana in the first inning with a single to right center to score Max Mosser and tally an RBI.
In the second inning, JT Mix hit his first home run of the season to add another run to the board for the Vikings.Â
Winona State tied it up with a home run in the second, scoring two Warriors.
Augustana took the lead in the third inning when Jordan Barth hit a solo bomb to right field. Barth's homer is his eighth of the season.
Mix led the Vikings with two hits, while Max Mosser, Carter Howell, Olson and Barth each added one hit.Â
Game Two: Augustana 9, Winona State 1
Jed Schmidt was the first AU pitcher on the mound in game two, staying for two innings. Schmidt logged two strikeouts in the game. Adam Diedrich, Clayton Thompson, Caleb Saari, Thomas Bruss, Tony Lanier, Josh Olson and Drey Dirksen all spent time on the mound for the Vikings in the nine-inning victory.
The Vikings got off to an early lead in the first inning when Carter Howell hit a double that sent Max Mosser home to score. Howell was brought home later in the inning by Will Olson's ground out to the WSU shortstop. To close out the inning, Jaxon Rosencranz hit a double that scored Luke Ballweg.
In the second inning, Howell brought Mosser home with him with a homer down the right-field line. The Vikings led 5-0 when Winona State was able to add a single run.
A Jack Hines double in the fifth inning brought in Rosencranz to add another run to the board.Â
In the sixth inning, Howell brought home Mosser for the third time in the game to push the Vikings to a 7-1 lead.
Augustana closed out the game with two runs in the ninth inning. Jordan Barth scored Howell on a single and Barth tallied a run on a single from Hines.
Howell and Mosser each logged three hits while Howell added four RBI.
