MINOT, N.D.--No. 17 Augustana baseball fell to the Minot State Beavers in both games of its Tuesday doubleheader. AU drops to 22-6-1 overall and 12-3 in NSIC play. Minot State moves to 17-13 overall and 11-5 in conference action.
Game One: Minot State 11, Augustana 3Â
Caleb Saari started on the mound for Augustana, hanging on for 3.1 innings. The Vikings would see Adam Diedrich, Clayton Thompson and Jason Axelberg on the mound in game one.
Minot State got off to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning with a ground out to second that allowed a runner to score and a sacrifice fly to left field.
Augustana struck in the third inning when Carter Howell brought in Maddux Baggs with a double to right center. Baggs reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Minot State increased the lead by a run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Vikings tied up the game in the top of the fourth inning when Michael Schoettmer reached first base on a throwing error from the Beavers' shortstop. Tony Lanier and Jordan Barth tallied runs for AU. Barth had singled previously in the inning and Lanier was walked.
Minot State stacked on eight more runs in the next three innings to take the game 11-3.
At the plate in game one, Howell had two hits while Barth logged one.
Game Two: Minot State 4, Augustana 3
Starting the game for Augustana was Seth Miller on the mound. Miller pitched 5.2 innings and logged six strikeouts. Tony Lanier entered the game in the sixth inning and added a strikeout. Josh Olson spent one inning on the mound. Drey Dirksen finished out the game for the Vikings, striking out one of three batters that he faced.
Augustana started the scoring in the first inning when a Carter Howell double to the left side brought in Max Mosser. Mosser reached second base with a double to left field.
In the fifth inning, the Beavers evened the score when a runner was brought home by a single to left field.
It was a two-out rally for Minot State in the sixth inning when they added three runs to push the lead to 4-1.
A sacrifice fly to the Minot State left fielder by Max Mosser sent Maddux Baggs home to score and cut the lead to two.
In the ninth inning, Baggs singled to center field, scoring Will Olson and dropping Minot State's lead to one run.Â
Six Vikings in the lineup recorded at least one hit in the nine-inning contest.
