Viking Baseball Falls to Quincy Friday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Augustana baseball team fell twice Friday at Quincy in a pair of nonconference games. Both contests ended with 7-2 scores.

The three-game series concludes Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest in Quincy, Illinois. Due to impending weather, the game is being moved up to 10 a.m. instead of the originally scheduled noon first pitch.

Game One: Quincy 7, Augustana 2
Augustana loaded the bases in the opening frame but was unable to push a run across the plate with an inning-ending double play. Nick Banowetz doubled down the right-field line and Parker Mooney walked to place runners on first and second. Drey Dirksen then singled to third base to load the bases but the threat ended with a 6-4-3 double play.

The home Hawks plated two runs in the third inning courtesy of a home run and added two more in the fifth inning. The lead stretched to 6-0 before AU plated a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning.

Those runs came courtesy of a bases-loaded wild pitch. Trey Walker, who was pinch-running for Jack Sutton was the first run to cross home plate. Sutton reached base on a double down the left-field line. The second run was courtesy of a Drey Dirksen sacrifice fly.

Quincy added a seventh run in the bottom of the eighth for the game's final run.

Augustana totaled nine hits in the contest but was doomed by three errors. Caleb Saari was charged with his first loss of the season, tossing five innings, giving up 10 hits and six runs, four earned. He struck out nine batters to increase his season total to 40 in just 29 innings pitched.

Game Two: Quincy 7, Augustana 2
Quincy built a 7-0 lead over the first eight innings, with two runs in the first, one in the fifth and sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth.

Augustana's bats recorded six hits in the contest with both runs coming in the top of the ninth inning. Max Mosser reached base on a single through the right side and advanced to second base thanks to a single by Joshua Koskie. The duo each moved up a base as Parker Mooney grounded out. With Nick Banowetz at the plate, the pitcher recorded a throwing error to score both Mosser and Koskie scored to make the game a 7-2 final score.

Ryan Jares was charged with the loss after throwing 5.2 innings and giving up four runs and striking out four.
