Viking Baseball Hosts Winona State for Regular Season Finale

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--The Augustana baseball team welcomes the Winona State Warriors to Ronken Field Tuesday for a doubleheader to conclude the regular season. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.

Scouting the Warriors
Winona State is 20-24 overall in 2023 and 16-13 in the NSIC. The Warriors sit in the seventh spot in the conference, just ahead of Wayne State. Winona State was last in action against Upper Iowa, falling short in the three-game series. Derek Baumgartner, Ryland Wall, Kyle Yu and Cooper Kapanke make u p a quarter of heavy hitters for the Warriors. Baumgartner is hitting .388 and leads the lineup with 54 hits and 18 doubles. Wall follows up with a batting average of .387, 48 hits and 27 RBI. Making the start in 36 games for WSU, Yu has logged 51 hits and eight doubles. Kapanke rounds out the quartet with a batting average of .310, 49 hits and leads the Warriors with six home runs. On the mound, Justin Firpo and Peyton Lee have each made nine starts. Firpo has an ERA of 5.5, 33 strikeouts and a record of 3-2. Lee leads the way with 38 strikeouts and has an ERA of 7.69.

The Vikings
Augustana is 37-16 overall in 2023 with an NSIC record of 26-7. The Vikings were last in action against Concordia-St.Paul, earning the sweep. AU sits atop the NSIC, edging out Minnesota State in second place. Augustana has successfully stolen 134 bases this season. Leading the charge is Nick Banowetz, who is 29-of-32 on stolen base attempts. Trevor Winterstein is 28-of-31 and Jack Hines is 19-of-20. At the plate, Hines, Banowetz, Winterstein, and Drey Dirksen have been impactful for the Vikings this season. Hines leads the lineup with a batting average of .367 and has totaled 66 hits, 10 doubles, four triples and 31 RBI. Dirksen is tops on the team with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 46 RBI. Following with 11 doubles and two triples is Banowetz, who is hitting .354. Winterstein has a .313 batting average, 65 hits, six doubles, four triples, five home runs and 36 RBI. Seth Miller, a two-time NSIC pitcher of the week in 2023, has amassed 73 strikeouts and has a record of 8-1. Caleb Saari has recorded 69 strikeouts and has a 2.70 ERA, holding a record of 5-2 overall. Caleb Kranz has struck out 72 batters in 2023, has a 5-1 record and has spent 50.2 innings on the mound. Adam Diedrich is second in the nation and leads the Viking pitching staff with 10 saves this season.
