The USNTDP was started in 1996 by USA Hockey as a way to identify elite ice hockey players under the age of 18, and centralize their training. The program is composed of two squads, the US National Under-17 and Under-18. The Under-17 team competes in the United State Hockey league and international events annually. The Under-18 team's schedule includes games against NCAA DI and DIII programs, USHL contests, and International tournaments.
The U.S. has won 11 gold medals at the IIHF World Men's Under-18 Championship with each team composed primarily of NTDP players.
The development team has 396 NHL Draft Picks with five first-overall picks, NHL prominent players who have gone first-overall include Jack Hughes, Auston Matthews, Patrick Kane, Erik Johnson, and Rick DiPietro.
