BISMARCK, N.D. - The No. 14 Augustana wrestling team earned its eighth ranked victory on Friday night, knocking off No. 13 UMary 24-12 in the McDowell Activity Center.
The Vikings, winners of five straight, are now 11-4 on the season and 5-1 in the NSIC while the Marauders move to 7-4, 3-2.
Jaxson Rohman led 3-0 through two after an early takedown. Rohman planted his flag in the third period with two takedowns, an escape, and a riding point to close out a major decision.
Hunter Burnett followed a loss at 133 with a major decision at 141 to reclaim a lead for the Vikings. Burnett opened the bout with a first period takedown and added a takedown and reversal to lead 8-1 into the third period. He closed the third period with a pair of takedowns and a riding point to put AU ahead 8-6.
At 149,
Cael Larson had four first period takedowns to take a commanding lead. He closed the third Viking major decision out with a takedown and escape in the second and an escape in the third to increase the AU lead to 12-6.
Connor Simmonds eased to victory at 157 pounds, recording a takedown in the first period before each wrestler rode out their respective period on top to close a 4-1 decision.
Tyler Wagener followed with a decision of his own at 165, scoring on a first period takedown, second period escape, and third period riding point to put the Vikings in front 18-6.
Following a loss at 174, the Vikings saw back-to-back dramatic victories at 184 and 197 to close out the AU win. It started with
Cade Mueller at 184 pounds, who took a 1-1 bout into overtime. After a scoreless sudden victory round, Mueller rode out a tiebreaker round before getting an escape in the next one to finish off a decision.
At 197,
Max Ramberg led 3-2 into the third period after a second period takedown. He pieced it together from there, earning a stall point and escape to go ahead 5-2. After allowing a takedown, Ramberg eased out an escape late to cap off a decision and close out the Viking victory.
