Baseball Extends Win Streak to Eight in Sweep of Bemidji State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana baseball team extended its win streak to eight and completed a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon, defeating Bemidji State 12-2 in seven innings at Ronken Field. The Vikings improved to 10-2 on the season and 4-0 in NSIC action.

J.D. Hennen earned the victory, allowing just one hit and one walk in six innings while striking out eight. Hennen faced just two over the minimum and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Jack Hines went 2 for 4 with a double, home run, two RBI, and two runs scored to power an offense that had 10 hits and reached base 19 times. Luke Ballweg went 2 for 3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI, and Jason Axelberg went 2 for 2 with a double, RBI, and run scored. Both Ballweg and Axelberg reached base three times, along with Drey Dirksen. Dirksen went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks.

Hennen opened the game with three strikeouts in the first two innings. The Vikings followed in the bottom of the second with a five spot while sending 10 batters to the plate to open the scoring. Ballweg slugged a double to right and Tate Meiners reached on an error when attempting a sac bunt, scoring Ballweg and putting himself into scoring position.

Axelberg scored Meiners with a double and Nick Banowetz drove in a run of his own two batters later, scoring Ragan Pinnow on a fielder's choice to give AU a 3-0 lead. Another Beaver error with one out allowed Banowetz and Axelberg to score and complete the inning.

The Vikings scored four more in the fourth to inflate their lead. Banowetz and Parker Mooney opened the inning with singles, with Banowetz wheeling all the way home from first on Mooney's knock. Hines put a pair in scoring position with a double, and Ballweg followed with a double of his own to score both. Pinnow rounded the inning with a sac fly to score Ballweg and give AU a 9-0 lead through four.

Hines was able to touch'em all in the fifth, sending a two-out, two-run shot to right field to increase the lead to 11-0, and Ryan Clementi reached on an error after entering as a pinch-hitter in the sixth to score Maddux Baggs and round out the AU scoring.

The Vikings allowed a pair of runs in the seventh inning, snapping a 29 inning scoreless streak from the staff. The three consecutive shutouts from AU tied the second-longest shutout streak in program history, one shy of the program record set in 2018.

The Vikings travel to Fayette, Iowa on Wednesday for a single midweek game against Upper Iowa. First pitch slated for 1:30 p.m.
