FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. - At one of the largest races in the country, the Augustana cross country teams made some noise. The No. 4-ranked women's program won the 38th Roy Griak Invitational Maroon 6k title with 45 points, the second fewest in race history. The men closed the 8k in third place with 121 points.
Ryan Hartman also ran to victory, finishing the Men's Maroon 8k in 25:16.1, 13 seconds ahead of second place.
"It was a solid performance by both crews today at the Griak," said Augustana head coach
Tracy Hellman. "I felt that we battled and performed well in tough conditions and a strong field.
Ryan Hartman winning was a great accomplishment as winning the individual title is always difficult to do at a meet of this stature. He has established himself as one of the top runners in the country and I'm excited for him going forward.
"Our women showed the strength of pack running and we did a nice job of moving up throughout the race. We are in a great spot and excited to put in the work to get better in the next 7-9 weeks."
On the women's side,
Ella Bakken led the Viking pack, finishing third with a time of 22:14.6.
Eleni Lovgren slotted in at seventh with a time of 22:34.7 while
Aubrey Surage (23:07.4) and
Ashley Overgaauw (23:10.2) paced each other, finishing 10th and 11th respectively.
Taylor Melton rounded out the top-20 Vikings, coming in 19th after running a 23:39.7.
The men's team would have a pair of finishers in the top-20, as Hartman was joined by
Brady Hogan's 15th place finish in 26:34.4.
Kadin Groen ran the 8k in 26:50.9 to finish 28th and
Daniel Street turned in a 29th place finish at a time of 26:51.7. Rounding out the Viking top five was
Isaiah Anderson, whose 27:26.5 time placed him 54th.
Next up, the Vikings head to Brookings, S.D., to participate in the SDSU Classic on October 4. The event is set to start at 5 p.m.
