LUBBOCK, Texas – For the first time in his career, Mariano Gomez has been named the National Player of the Week, announced by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Thursday afternoon. He earned the award for the week ending on April 12, 2026, and becomes the eighth Viking to earn an NCBWA weekly honor all-time and second this season. 

Gomez turned in a historic outing by tossing a complete-game no-hitter in a 2-0 victory over Winona State. Gomez struck out 10 batters across seven innings while facing the minimum 21 hitters, as all three walks he issued were erased on the bases. He displayed exceptional command and efficiency throughout the performance, mixing his pitches to induce four flyouts and four groundouts without allowing a hit.

Through nine appearances and eight starts this season, Gomez is 6-0 with a 3.35 ERA and 1.09 WHIP in 45 2/3 innings of work. He holds an opponent's batting average of .189 and has struck out 59 hitters.
