RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. - A pair of Vikings earned NCBWA All-Central Region First Team honors, announced Friday by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Troy Berg and
Mariano Gomez each earned recognition.
The NCBWA All-Region teams are voted on by members of the organization's regional committees, composed of sports information directors and athletic communications specialists. Each First-Team member automatically advances to the All-America ballot, and teams will be announced in late May.
Troy Berg | Dickinson, N.D.
The senior has provided stability in the middle of the order, hitting .316 with a 1.035 OPS. Berg has 17 doubles overall and 10 home runs with 53 RBI and 66 runs scored. He has also stolen 24 bases, tied for the post in program history without getting caught. The righty has 18 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI games and also tied the program record for doubles in a game with four against Bemidji State in February.
Mariano Gomez | San Pedro Sula, Honduras
The senior lefty won the NSIC's triple crown, leading the league with a 2.40 ERA, a 7-0 record and 65 strikeouts in conference play. Overall, Gomez went 8-0 with a 4.19 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings and leads a staff that ranks first in the country with 10.6 K/9. Opponents have hit just .210 against him and he threw a no-hitter on April 9 against Winona State, striking out 10 and facing the minimum while being named NCBWA Pitcher of the week.
The Viking baseball team continues NCAA action on Friday night, taking on host Pittsburg State at 6 p.m., in Kansas.
