Augustana women's basketball to open 2015-16 regular season Friday

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Augustana University women's basketball team begins their 2015-16 season when they travel down the road to the University of Sioux Falls to take on Northwest Missouri State and the University of Nebraska-Kearney on Friday and Saturday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

Augustana defeated St. Olaf College 84-29 back on Nov. 2 in their lone exhibition contest of the season in the Elmen Center. Sophomore Sophie Kenney tallied a game-high 17 points while tying for the game-high in rebounds with sophomore Logan O'Farrell who each had seven boards. As a team the Vikings shot 45 percent from the field and 43 percent from behind the arc.

Augustana returns four starters from a year ago, seniors Nicole Kerkhoff and Sophie Kenney, and freshman Paige Peterson and O'Farrell. Kerkhoff is lone returner who averaged double-digit scoring last season at 11.5 points per game.

The Vikings were picked eighth in this year's Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference preseason poll and fifth in the South Division.

Northwest Missouri State played their only exhibition game of the season on Nov. 4, defeating Graceland 78-66. The Bearcats were led sophomore Tanya Meyer who scored a game-high 15 points while grabbing six rebounds. The Bearcats are coming off an 8-20 season a year ago and are 18-37 during head coach Michael Smith's tenure in Maryville.

The University of Nebraska-Kearney fell to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln 92-54 in their only exhibition of the 2015-16 season back on Nov. 1. The Lopers were led by sophomore McKenzie Brown who scored a team-high 16 points in 32 minutes of action against the Huskers. UNK shot 32 percent from the field and 30 percent from behind the 3-point line. Nebraska-Kearney is coming off 12-17 season while welcoming first year head coach, Carrier Hofstetter to the program.
