No. 12 Augustana Women's Basketball Hosts Peru State Wednesday

Vikings jump two spots in the national rankings

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Fresh off of a weekend sweep and seven straight wins overall, the No. 12 Augustana women's basketball team now looks to close out their non-conference schedule strong. The Vikings will take on Peru State (Neb.) at 5:30 p.m. in the Elmen Center, with the game being part of a men's/women's doubleheader. The Augustana men will follow with a 7:30 tip-off vs. Hasting (Neb.).

Nationally, the Vikings jumped up two spots to no. 12 in the most recent D2SIDA National poll. Augustana has also cracked the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll tied for No. 23. In the most recent central regional rankings poll, the Vikings landed at no. 2. Their 12-1 record gave them 53 points, just 7 points behind no. 1, Fort Hays State (9-0).

Augustana (12-1, 5-0 NSIC South) comes into Wednesday's matchup leading the conference in scoring, averaging just over 82 points per game. Nationally, the Vikings rank 11th in scoring offense are top-ten in scoring margin. Augustana average margin of victory is 24.2 points per game. Augustana looks to keep up the fast caliber of play vs. Peru State, who allows opponents to score just above 80 points per game.

Following their impressive start, the Vikings have also cracked the top-three in another pair of national statistics. The Vikings are 3rd in total steals with 153 (11.7/game) and lead the nation in total rebounds with 600 (46.2/game).

The Vikings success this season stems from their aggressive and active defense which transitions into buckets on offense. In a pair of wins last weekend, the Vikings scored 56 points off the 36 turnovers they forced and dropped 35 points in transition.

The Vikings come into Wednesday nights game winners of seven straight,  and their scratch free conference record puts them first in the south division. Over the course of five NSIC matchups, the Vikings check in at no. 1 in the conference in scoring margin (26.8 ppg) and assists per game (20.6).

Through the course of 12 games, leading the way for Augustana is the back-to-back NSIC South Player of the Week, Shelby Selland. Selland drops 15.2 points per game, along with grabbing 9.2 rebounds per contest.

In the Vikings most recent win over Bemidji State, 11 student-athletes landed in the scoring column. A night after scoring 27 vs. Crookston, Augustana was again led by Selland with 23 points and five rebounds.

Scouting No.12 Augustana:
• Augustana is 12-1 overall and is averaging 80.5 ppg
• The Vikings are outscoring their opponents by 24.3 points per game through 12 games this season.
• Augustana is holding their opponents to just 57.9 points per game.
• Augustana is shooting 44.9 percent from the field as a team, including 31.6 percent from 3-point land.
• Augustana is averaging 46.2 rebounds per game, on the defensive boards Augustana ranks 9th in the nation grabbing 32 per game.
• The Vikings dishing out 18 assists per game coming off of their first two-game homestand of conference play, which is 5th in the nation.
• Augustana is grabbing 11.8 steals per game after through five conference games.

Scouting Peru State:
• Peru State is led by interim head coach Joan Albury.
• PSC comes into this non-conference matchup 2-9 to start their 2018-19 season.
• Overall, they are shooting 37.7 percent as a team from the field (267-708).
• The Bobcats are averaging 67 points per game through 12 games while giving up 80 points per contest.
• PSC ranks no. 21 in NAIA DI in offensive rebounds per games (14.36).
• The Bobcats rank 36th in the nation in total rebounds per game (41.18).
• PSC most recent win came against Culver-Stockton College, 67-65.
• Leading the way for the Bobcats is Alyssa Marsch-Contreras, she averages 18.4 points-per-game, which is 13th in NAIA DI.
• Marsch-Contreras is shooting 51.2 percent from the field (63-123).
