Viking Swim Defeats UMary in Home Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana swimming team opened up its home portion of the schedule with a 160-102 win over UMary on Saturday morning inside the Elmen Center. 

In the first event of the morning, the 400-yard medley relay 'A' team kicked things off with a time of 4:06.64 and a first-place finish. The 'B' team finished in third place with a time of 4:13.81. The 'A' team consisted of Destini Oehlertz, Alysse Grohs, Linzie Kreizel and Emma Miller. The 'B' team consisted of Chrislin Nieuwoudt, Maggie Oberg, Ruth Huffman and Kamryn Robarge

NSIC Player to Watch Taylor Beagle carried the success over into the 1650-yard freestyle as she placed first with a time of 17:52.05. Kelsey Gilbert finished fourth with a time of 18:56.22. In the 200-yard freestyle, four Vikings placed in the top-five. Oehlertz placed second with a time of 1:57.49, Miller took third with a time of 1:59.79, Kreizel placed fourth with a time of 2:00.64 and Kamryn Robarge finished fifth with a time of 2:00.98.

Nieuwoudt took home top honors in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:01.46 while Grohs placed second in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.71. Grohs would take first-place in the 200-yard breaststroke after finishing in 2:32.44. Huffman finished in first place with a time of 2:15.23 in the 200-yard butterfly and Hannah Lambert placed second with a time of 2:20.01. Huffman would also take top honors in the 200-yard IM after swimming a time of 2:16.70. 

Five Vikings placed placed in the top-six of the 50-yard freestyle while six Vikings placed in the top-seven of the 100-yard freestyle. Oehlertz took home first place honors after finishing in 53.60 in the 100-yard freestyle. Kreizel would be one of three Vikings in the top-three in the 100-yard butterfly after a time of 1:00.51 earned her first place. 

Finishing things off was the 200-yard freestyle relay. The 'A' team would end the dual on a high note for the Vikings as they took home first place with a time of 1:40.92 while the 'B' team finish right behind them with a time of 1:43.42. The 'A' team consisted of Justine Stellmaker, Kelsey Gilbert, Miller and Oehlertz while the 'B' team consisted of Robarge, Merriam Hagadorn, Rebecca Schmidt and Isabel Waite

The Vikings compete in the Sioux Falls Quad Dual on Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Midco Aquatic Center.
