NEW ORLEANS – On the heels of a historic performance at the NCAA Central Regionals, 10 student-athletes from the Augustana men's and women's cross country teams have been named to the All-Region team. The region teams are recognized by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The women, who won their first NCAA Central Region title since 2012, earned six spots on the All-region team:
Claire Boersma,
Patty Jo English,
Rachel Rairdon,
Rebekah Rairdon,
Cait Savey,
Nicolette Schmidt. The Vikings beat out conference foe UMary for the title and finished with 41 points, the second-lowest total in program history.
The Augustana women, who are one of just eight programs to total six or more honorees, will be running at the NCAA DII Championships for the 13th time in the last 14 years.
The men's program finished three runners in the top-15 overall and will be making their 11th-straight trip to the NCAA Championships. All-Region men's performers include:
Austin Miller,
Aaron Runge,
Nathan Schroeder, and
Jesus Urtusuastegui. Individually, Runge led the way for the Vikings placing third overall with a time of 30:13.30.
In 2018, the programs earned 11 NCAA DII All-Region honorees, which was the most in program history. Over the last two years, Augustana has 21 All-Region athletes, most of all programs competing in the NCAA Central Region.
All 10 of the Viking student-athletes, along with the rest of the Augustana Cross Country teams, now compete in two weeks at the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships on November 23 in Sacramento, California. Augustana is the only team in the central region to qualify both men and women to the Division II Cross Country Championships.
