Augustana Track and Field Opens Indoor Season in Strong Fashion

Tyl Woelber, Aaron Runge break Augustana school records

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The Augustana men's and women's indoor track and field teams had strong showings this weekend at the SDSU Holiday Open in Brookings, South Dakota, and Mel Tjeerdsma Classic in Maryville, Missouri. 

The Vikings were led by sophomore Tyl Woelber and senior Aaron Runge who broke the school records in the high jump and 5K, respectively. 

The Men
Sophomore Tyl Woelber turned in an impressive showing in the heptathlon. Woelber broke the school record in the high jump with a jump of 2.11m, winning the event as part of the heptathlon.  Woelber also placed fourth in the 60m (7.25), second in the long jump (6.75m), third in shot put (12.42m) and fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.73). 

The Viking men also dominated the 400m as four of the top-ten finishers were Augustana athletes. Junior Ryan Sully led the men with a fourth-place finish and a time of 49.76. Senior Blake Savey took sixth-place with a time of 50.26, sophomore Josh Schumacher took seventh with a time of 50.33 and freshman Jed Dooyema took tenth with a time of 51.39. Sully, Schumach and Dooyema's times were also personal bests. 

The aforementioned Runge ran the 5K with teammate Jesus Urtusuastegui at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri. Runge broke the school record with a fourth-place finish and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:18.76. Urtusuastegui turned in a personal best time of 14:40.88 and placed ninth. 

Overall, the men finished in fifth place, behind three Division I teams, at the SDSU Holiday Open.

Other Top Performances
Freshman Connor Clayton had a nice college debut as he finished in second place in the triple jump at 13.56m. 

Sophomore Noah Melton recorded a personal best in the 600m with a time of 1:22.05. The mark qualified him for seventh place. 

Senior Riley Crawford took fifth-place in the 60m with a time of 7.18. Freshman Connor Clayton ran a personal best in the event with a time of 7.31 while finishing in 14th-place. 

The Women
Freshman Elizabeth Schaefer earned an impressive fifth-place finish with 3,505 points in her collegiate debut in the pentathlon. Schaefer finished in fifth-place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.06, second-place in the high jump (1.66m), ninth-place in shot put (9.81m), third place in the long jump (5.30m) and eighth-place in the 800m with a time of 2:34.16. 

Junior Sydney Mudgett took home first-place honors in the 300m with a time of 41:40. Sophomore Kaitlyn Mulder took sixth in the event with a time of 42:52 while junior Morgan Rothschadl took 11th with a time of 46.21. 

Six Vikings also ran the 5K at the Mel Tjeerdsma Classic this weekend. Sophomore Nicolette Schmidt led the Vikings with a third-place finish and provisional qualifying mark along with a personal best time of 17:20.5. Three other Vikings also recorded personal best times, redshirt freshman Patty Jo English in ninth-place (17:34.7), sophomore Cait Savey in 11th-place (17:43.1) and junior Rachel Rairdon in 13th-place (17:49.5). Junior Rebekah Rairdon and sophomore Haylee Waterfall also finished in 12th and 14th place with times of 17:45.6 and 18:03.7, respectively. 

Overall, the women finished in fourth place at the SDSU Holiday Open, behind three Division I opponents.

Other Top Performances
Senior, and defending pentathlon national champion, Olivia Montez Brown placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.70. Junior Selin Dikmen followed closely behind in seventh-place with a time of 9.05, her personal best. 

Junior Callie DeWitt took home fifth-place honors in the 60m dash with a time of 7.79. 

Selin Dikmen also finished in fifth-place in the 200m with a time of 25.77.

Up Next
Both teams will return to action in the new year on Jan. 17 at the MSU Invitational in Mankato, Minnesota.
