SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- For the ninth straight season, the Augustana women's tennis team is headed to the NCAA Central Region tournament, this time as the No. 3 seed. The Vikings will travel to Topeka, Kan. to take on the No. 6 seed Northwest Missouri State on Monday, May 13 at 1 p.m. at the Washburn Tennis Complex on the campus of the host school Washburn.
The Vikings (19-2, 11-0 NSIC) are coming off 110 straight conference wins dating back to the 2009 season and champions of both the Northern Sun Conference (NSIC) regular season title and tournament title. Augustana holds a 92-15 record in singles action and a 49-10 record in doubles play this past season against their opponents.
Fresh off her fourth-straight NSIC Player of the Year,
Kornelia Staniszewska compiled a perfect 18-0 record in No. 1 Singles and an equally impressive 20-0 record in No. 1 Doubles. Staniszewska is ranked as the No. 31 singles player in the latest ITA rankings on May 1, she is also ranked No. 17 in doubles action while teamed up with
Laura Arce Vieyra.
Arce Vieyra capped off an impressive freshman season with winning the NSIC Freshman of the Year award. The Mexico City, Mexico native, finished the regular season with a 15-1 record in No. 2 Singles and a 20-0 record in No.1 Doubles.
Junior
Taylor Jackson is 16-2 over the course of the season in No. 3 Singles and 13-6 in doubles action this season.
Grace Goble, a native of Rapid City, S.D., went 14-3 in singles action and 16-4 in doubles action. The Baia Mare, Romania native,
Anca Rusu had a successful junior season going 14-2 in singles action and 13-6 in doubles action.
Scouting Northwest Missouri State
The Bearcats come into the NCAA Tournament as the No. 6 seed in the Central Region after an impressive regular season. Northwest Missouri State is 17-6 overall and 15-6 against regional play this season. They have a 111-62 record in singles action and a 50-32 record in doubles play throughout the regular season. The Vikings are 3-2 against the Bearcats dating back to the 2014 season, Augustana won the first three meetings and have lost the past two against the Bearcats. The Vikings and NW Missouri State were schedule to play this season but was cancelled due to weather.
Individually, Irene Recuenco is ranked No. 17 and freshman Julia Aliseda is ranked No. 57 in the singles rankings. The doubles duo of Tania Teruel and Marta Ferrando is ranked No. 15 in the nation.
The winner of the match will advance to take on No. 2 seed and host Washburn (22-3) in the regional final at 1 p.m. on Tues., May 14 at the Washburn Tennis Complex.
