Viking Baseball Begins 2020 Season with Split Against No. 21 Arkansas Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. -- The No. 13 Augustana baseball team opened its 2020 campaign with a doubleheader split against the No. 21 ranked Boll Weevils of Arkansas Monticello Saturday afternoon in Monticello, Arkansas. The Vikings outhit the Boll Weevils 16-7 and played errorless defensively on the day.

Game One
After a quiet first three innings, Viking senior Riley Johnson recorded Augustana's first hit of the day with a two-out single in the fourth inning. Junior Jordan Barth followed Johnson with a perfectly executed hit and run to put runners on the corners, but a groundout ended the Augustana threat.

Augustana starting pitcher Seth Miller cruised in innings one through four, but after both teams went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, a tough bottom of the fifth inning plagued the Vikings. Miller was pulled after allowing a leadoff single and walking the bases loaded with one out. The Boll Weevils then scored four runs off the Viking bullpen on an RBI single, two RBI walks and a balk to go up 4-0.

The Vikings, however, stormed all the way back to tie the game at 4-4, starting in the seventh inning with a two-run single by junior infielder JT mix. In the eighth inning, after Johnson smoked his second single of the day, junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz doubled Johnson home and came around to score on a wild pitch to knot the score up.

The game stayed tied until there were two outs in the bottom of the ninth. The Boll Weevils worked a two-out walk, before Monticello's Hudson Hopkins doubled a run home for the walk-off victory.

Overall, Augustana out-hit Monticello 7-4 while both teams played errorless in the field. Barth and Johnson tallied two hits apiece while Rosencranz logged the lone extra-base hit of the game for the Vikings. Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell notched a single in the effort as well.

Miller's final stat line showed 4.1 innings pitched with two hits, three walks, three earned runs and five strikeouts. Seniors Parker Hanson, Koby Bishop and Caleb Stratmoen and junior Thomas Bruss all saw work in relief.

Game Two
Augustana flipped the script on Monticello in game two by going up 4-0 early, a lead which they would not surrender.

Senior Sam Baier led the game off with a single up the middle and then immediately stole second. Baier moved to third on a single by junior infielder Bjorn Hanson and scored on a Riley Johnson groundout to put the Vikings up 1-0 in the first.

The Vikings struck again in the second as junior infielder Ryan Nickel stroked a two-out double, before scoring on an RBI double off the bat of Baier later in the inning. In the third inning, after a Johnson bunt single and Barth double, Carter Howell drove in two more Augie runs with a single to right-center to push the lead to 4-0.

Monticello starting pitcher Connor Wilkerson was removed after Howell's hit, surrendering four earned runs and seven hits, three of which went for extra bases on the day.

The Augustana bats were held to just two hits the rest of the game, but none more were needed as junior lefty Tanner Brown had all the run support that he needed on the day. Brown cruised through his five innings of work in the seven-inning affair, giving up only two hits and two walks, while logging five strikeouts.

Fellow lefty pitcher, senior Jasper Elfrink came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and secure the win for Augustana with a final score of 4-1.

Overall, Johnson recorded two more hits, for a total of four on the day, while Baier and Hanson tallied two hits in the game as well. Howell, Barth and Nickel finished the game with one hit each.
