Vikings Earn Sunday, Series Split Against Arkansas Monticello

MONTICELLO, Ark. -- The No. 13 ranked Augustana baseball team earned a split on Sunday, and in the four-game series, with No. 21 Arkansas Monticello. The Vikings defeated the Boll Weevils 9-4 in game two Sunday afternoon, after dropping the first contest 8-3.

Game One
Arkansas Monticello scored early and added on late in game one as the Boll Weevils pushed a pair of runs across in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings against the Vikings Sunday morning. The early runs came on a couple of homers from Monticello, a two-run shot by Jordan Johnson in the first and a solo shot by Grant Shepard in the second. Monticello's Andrew Piraino elevated the lead to 4-0 with an RBI single in the second.

Monticello scored its final four runs in the late innings on a couple of RBI's singles, an RBI double and a bases loaded walk. The final stat line for the Augustana pitchers read 8 innings with eight hits allowed, 8 strikeouts, six earned runs and 13 free passes, three of which were HBP's and one of which was intentional.

Offensively, the Vikings scattered seven hits in the game, led by Jordan Barth, who notched his second multi-hit game in three tries this season. Down 8-1 in the eighth inning, Carter Howell smoked a two-run double to the right field corner to score Seth Miller and Barth, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to move the score to 8-3. That score would prove to be the final as the Vikings ended their eighth inning rally and went 1-2-3 in the ninth.

Other hits for the Vikings included a double for Ford Schroder and singles by Bjorn Hanson, Riley Johnson, who extended his hitting streak to three games, and Ryan Nickel

Game Two
Much like yesterday's games, the Vikings flipped the script on the Boll Weevils in game two Sunday afternoon. Augustana scored early and often and even a three-run first inning by Monticello wasn't enough to slow the Vikings down.

A two-out rally from Augustana started its scoring off in the first inning. Riley Johnson collected a free pass and two pitches later Jordan Barth rifled a single to left field to put runners on the corners. Then, Jaxon Rosencranz reached on an error by the shortstop to score Johnson and put Augie up 1-0. The error was the first of three the Boll Weevils would commit in the afternoon affair.

Monticello responded by scoring three two-out runs of its own in the first inning, but Augustana scored again in the second, four times in the fourth inning, twice in the sixth and once more in the seventh inning to bury any hopes of Monticello winning the series.

In the second inning, Ryan Nickel led off with a double to right field, the first of three hits for the junior on the day, and came around to score on a JT Mix RBI groundout. The Vikings then took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a four-spot. Ford Schroeder and Nickel both singled to start the frame and after a flurry of walks, errors, a Bjorn Hanson bunt single and a Riley Johnson sac fly, the Vikings lead 6-3.

The Vikings tacked on two more in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch and another Riley Johnson sac fly, and one more in the seventh, which came by way of another wild pitch. Monticello threatened the 8-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth, but only came away with one run as sophomore righty Josh Olson came in and retired the side, including two strikeouts, stranding two runners on base. The final score showed 9-4 a smooth seventh inning for the Vikings.

The aforementioned Nickel notched three of Augustana's nine hits while Sam Baier collected two hits as well. Jordan Barth extended his hitting streak to four games and JT Mix also notched a single in the victory.

On the mound, freshman Caleb Saari made his first-collegiate start and went two innings with five strikeouts. Junior Evan Furst took the victory with three scoreless innings of relief while striking out two and only allowing two hits. Thomas Bruss and Josh Olson pitched the last two innings to close the contest out.

Overall, in the series, Augustana outscored Arkansas Monticello 20-18, outhit them 32-21 and committed just one error to Monticello's six.
