Viking Baseball Sweeps Southwest Baptist With Sunday Victory

BOLIVAR, Mo. -- The Augustana baseball team capped off a sweep of the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist in a Sunday matinee with a 12-8 victory. The sweep moves the Vikings to 7-4 on the young season.

Down 3-0 after two innings, the Vikings scored nine unanswered runs, including a seven-run fourth, to take control of the game with a 9-3 lead. Jordan Barth started the scoring with an RBI single in the top of the third to put the visitors on the board. Sam Baier singled home another run in the top of the fourth and Carter Howell followed him with an RBI bases loaded walk to tie the game at three.

After a pitching change and strikeout in the same frame, the Vikings capitalized on a two-out bases-loaded situation in a big way. Barth scorched a single up the middle to bring two runs home and push the score to 5-3. Jaxon Rosencranz followed Barth with a double that brought two more runs home and Will Olson scored Rosencranz with an RBI double of his own for the fifth two-out RBI of the inning and an 8-3 Augustana lead.

Barth then recorded his third RBI single of the game in the top of the sixth for a 9-3 lead. The Bearcats crossed home once in the sixth inning and once in the eighth inning, but the Vikings squashed all questions of a comeback with three runs in the top of the ninth on RBI singles from Olson and Ryan Nickel and an RBI double from Bjorn Hanson.

Southwest Baptist scored three times in the ninth before Jed Schmidt came on to close out the 12-8 victory with a strikeout.

On the mound, Parker Hanson got the start and win for the Vikings with five innings, giving up three runs, two of which were unearned. He also tallied six strikeouts while only surrendering two hits. After Hanson, Koby Bishop pitched an inning of relief followed by two innings from Evan Furst. Thomas Bruss came in for two-thirds of the ninth inning before handing the ball to Schmidt.

The aforementioned Barth finished the day 4 for 4 with a double, walk, two runs scored and four RBI's. The junior finished the series with an 8-for-12 clip and has hit safely in all 11 games this season. Carter Howell and Riley Johnson chipped in one hit apiece in the offensive effort as well.
