Viking Baseball Sweeps Briar Cliff in 2020 Home Opener

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana baseball team opened up the 2020 season of Karras Park Home of Ronken Field in style Tuesday evening with a doubleheader sweep of the Briar Cliff Chargers. The wins moved the Vikings to 9-4 on the season and pushed their win streak to five.

Game One
An early offensive outburst and exceptional pitching proved to be the winning formula for Augustana in its 7-0 game one win.

Junior righty Garrett Payne got the start and win on the mound for the Vikings. Payne pitched three scoreless innings while scattering four hits and no walks. Koby Bishop followed Payne by striking out the side in the fourth inning, before Anthony Lanier took over, putting another zero on the scoreboard. Jared Campbell and Josh Peterson came on in the sixth and seventh, respectively, to finish off the combined shutout.

Offensively, junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz started the scoring off by scorching a two-run single up the middle in the bottom of the first. Ryan Nickel followed with an RBI single of his own to put the home team up by three after the first frame.

In the second inning, Jordan Barth extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double over the left fielder's head to put Augustana up 5-0. JT Mix worked a two-out walk in the bottom of the third inning and Carter Howell promptly made Briar Cliff pay with a two-out two-run homer, his second of the season, to put the Vikings up 7-0.

The Vikings would cruise the rest of the way and got two hits and two runs scored from Riley Johnson and one hit apiece from Mix, Sam Baier and Drey Dirksen.

Game Two
The Vikings capped off their sweep of Briar Cliff by pulling away late in game two with six runs scored in the last three innings of the seven-inning affair for the 9-3 victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Howell smoked a triple on an 0-2 count to the right centerfield wall, before Riley Johnson brought him home with an RBI single to tie the game.

Augustana took the lead for good in the bottom of the second when Baier doubled to lead off the inning, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a Ford Schroeder sacrifice fly. Rosencranz pushed the lead to 3-1 with his team-leading sixth home run of the season in the third inning, a majestic shot that took a visit to Kirkeby-Over Stadium just across the left-field fence.

Up 3-1, Augustana pulled away with a four-run bottom half of the fifth. Barth singled to start the inning, extending his hitting streak to 13 games, followed by a Rosencranz double to right center. Nickel brought both Vikings home with a two-run single up the middle and scored on Will Olson's third home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field that moved the score to 7-1.

Olson then notched RBIs three and four on the day with a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Barth and Johnson to put the Vikings up 9-1. Briar Cliff scratched two runs across in the top-half the seventh, before falling by a final score of 9-3.

Overall, five Vikings notched multi-hit days in game-two, Howell, Johnson (his second of the day), Barth, Rosencranz and Olson. Nickel, Baier and Bjorn Hanson each tallied one hit apiece.

On the mound, junior lefty Jed Schmidt got the start for the Vikings going two innings while surrendering three hits and one run. Evan Furst earned the win for Augustana with two scoreless innings of relief. Caleb Kranz relieved Furst with a scoreless fifth inning with two strikeouts. Thomas Bruss took the ball from Kranz and overpowered the Chargers with a scoreless sixth, striking out the side. Caleb Stratmoen and Caleb Saari combined efforts in the seventh to finish off the sweep.
