Viking Wrestling Wins Big at SMSU

MARSHALL, Minn. -- The Augustana wrestling team moved to 2-2 on the season Thursday night with a convincing 29-12 dual victory over Southwest Minnesota State. The Vikings defeated the Mustangs in seven of the 10 matches.

After a forfeit in the 125 pound bout, senior Brandon Carroll wasted no time in evening up the dual score with a pin over his opponent halfway through the second period of the 133 pound match. Tied 6-6, sophomore Jack Huffman took the mat at 141 pounds and delivered a 7-2 victory in which he recorded three takedowns and a riding time point.

With Augustana up 9-6, sophomore and No. 9-ranked, Hunter Burnett suited up in the 149 pound bout and delivered a monster performance. Burnett recorded six takedowns, eight points from near-falls, an escape and a stall warning point for a 22-4 tech fall and 14-6 Viking lead.

At 157 pounds, senior Jebben Keyes took care of business with a 7-3 victory which included a couple of takedowns, a reversal and a riding time point. Junior Dylan Schuck followed Keyes at 165 pounds with a shutout. Schuck scored eight points from near-falls, three takedowns, a stall warning point and an escape for a 16-0 tech fall. The two victories pushed Augustana's advantage to 22-6.

In the 174 pound bout, redshirt-freshman Cade Mueller continued his strong 2021 campaign with a 6-2 victory, featuring two takedowns and a riding time point. Sophomore Kolby Kost followed Mueller with Augustana's last victory of the night in the 184 pound match. Kost dominated much of the bout with five takedowns, an escape and riding time point for a 12-4 major decision.

Kost's victory coupled with losses in the 197 and 285 pound bouts moved the final dual score to 29-12 in favor of the Vikings.
