GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- The Augustana swimming & diving teams completed the first of two days of competition at the Quad Invite hosted by Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colo, on Friday night.
The No. 21 women's swimming & diving team went 2-1 with a 177-64 win over Western Colorado and a 130-101 win over No. 23 Colorado Mines. The Vikings fell to 169-73 to No. 9 Colorado Mesa. The men of Augustana were bested by Colorado Mines 158-47 and No. 8 Colorado Mesa 190-41.
"I thought we had a really good day considering the travel and change in altitude," Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko said. "There was very good competition and we are looking forward to a good second day."
Two-time NSIC Swimmer of the Year, Taylor Beagle, started the individual racing by winning the 1650-Free touching the wall in a time of 17:46.20. Beagle won the event by over twenty seconds and swam the final lap in 30.95 seconds.
Freshman Leona Coha placed second in a time of 18:06.62. Coha would return later in the meet to place second in the 300-Fly in 3:29.08.
Freshman Pedro Borin had a strong performance in the 400-IM, placing second in a time of 4:08.43, only a tenth of a second behind the winner. His time was also three seconds shy of hitting the NCAA B standard qualifying time.
Borin would return to the blocks to earn another runner-up finish. This time, it came in the 300-Fly, completing the event in 3:00.31.
Beagle returned after winning the 1650-Free to place second in the 500-Free (5:14.04). Freshman Makoa Montgomery claimed third in the event in a time of 5:17.99.
Senior Alysse Grohs had a runner-up finish in the 300-Breaststroke, swimming a time of 3:53.37.
Freshman Skylar Anderson made her diving debut for the Vikings with a sixth-place finish in the one-meter dive (137.95 points) and a fourth-place finish in the three-meter dive (122.40 points).
The Vikings return for the second day of the Quad Invite Saturday starting at 11 a.m. (CST).
