Swimming & Diving Closes Quad Invite in Colorado

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Augustana men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out its Rocky Mountain excursion Saturday at the quad duals hosted by Colorado Mesa.
 
The No. 21 ranked Viking women topped Western Colorado 212-86 while falling to No. 9 Colorado Mesa (171-119) and No. 23 Colorado Mines (179-109). The Augustana men, in its inaugural season, fell to No. 8 Colorado Mesa (199-77) and No. 22 Colorado Mines (211-50).
 
"We had a great day of racing," Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko said. "It was a unique racing experience and I thought the team handled it well."
 
A quick turnaround at elevation after a successful Friday night against the same three schools, Augustana saw just a single event winner in Taylor Beagle. The graduate student led a 1-2 finish for AU in the 1,000-Free in a time of 10:41.70.  Freshman Leona Coha followed behind in a time of 10:50.73. The duo bested the third-place finisher by 13 seconds.
 
Coha also garnered a third-place finish in the 200-Fly in a time of 2:15.66.
 
The men's squad was led by freshman Pedro Borin with a series of top-three finishes. Borin claimed runner-up honors in the 200-Fly and placed third in the 100-Fly in 50:37. His time in the 200 was 1:52 flat while he touched the wall in 50:37 in the 100.
 
The final event of the met was the 400-Free relay which saw the Viking women place second and the men third. The women's squad consisting of Kamryn Robarge, Meghan Mulvihill, Amaya Street and Makoa Montgomery earned its runner-up finish in 3:43.54. The men's team of Xander Smith, Kacper Mayerberg, Christion Goetsch and Evan Bell touched the wall in 3:22.74.
 
In addition to the swimmers, the women's squad continues its inaugural season of diving under the guidance of Shelby Bartlett. In the 1-meter dive, Bartlett's divers of Skylar Anderson and Hailey Handevidt continued to see improvement as Anderson recorded 168.2 points and Handevidt scored 135.85 points. In the 3-meter dive, Anderson recorded 163.40 points while Handevidt tallied 126.05 points.
 
Augustana takes a two-week break before returning to the pool in competition on Nov. 5-6. The women first compete on Nov. 5 at Northern State while both men and women compete at Midland in Fremont, Nebraska, on Nov. 6.
