Augustana Swimming & Diving Shows Out at Augustana Invitational

Men & Women place fourth overall

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana swimming & diving teams had another historic showing at the Augustana Invitational over three days inside the Midco Aquatic Center. In total, three school records fell on the women's side while the men's team continues to build its record book in the inaugural season.

Both the men and women placed fourth overall in the meet with the women scoring 781.50 points and the men scoring 760.50 points. South Dakota swept both the men's and women's titles with 1458.50 for the women and 1553 for the men.

Thursday:

Taylor Beagle started things off for the Vikings winning the 500-Free in a time of 4:54.71 to lower her own school record and dip below the NCAA B standards. Leona Coha placed third in the race with a time of 5:03.64 hitting the B standard by just over a second.

Beagle returned for the 200-IM, breaking one of the oldest school records dating back to Dec. 2, 2016. Beagle broke the school record held by Jojo Lohner by over three seconds, swimming a time of 2:04.81 hitting the B standard by under a second.

The women's team rounded out Thursday evening's competition by breaking the 800-Free relay that was set at the conference meet back in 2018. The team of Beagle, Amaya Street, Libby Breckon and Kamryn Robarge placed second in the event, breaking the school record by over a second, coming in at 7:37.31.

On the men's side, Pedro Borin won the 100-Fly in a time of 48.98, hitting the B qualifying standard. Steven Asmus placed fifth in the 500-Free touching the wall in a time of 4:42.73. 

Friday:

Beagle opened up Friday's competition with a win in the 400-IM, touching the wall in 4:25.18, just three seconds shy of her school record but well within the B qualifying standard. Coha was close behind, garnering a third-place finish in a time of 4:34.36.

The 400-IM proved to be a specialty for the Vikings, with Borin placing second in a time of 4:01.66. Jackson Dircks placed fifth for the Vikings in the 100-Back finishing in 51.84.

Saturday:

Dircks started the final day of competition placing third in the 200-Backstroke, swimming a time of 1:54.10.

Borin won his first event of the final day, swimming a time of 1:50.38 to win the 200-Fly.

Beagle returned to the pool to win the 1650-Free in a time of 17:06.39. She won the event by over 20 seconds. Coha earned a third-place finish in the event in a time of 17:32.93.

On the men's side, Steven Asmus and Aidan McCusker placed third and fourth overall in times of 16:16.66 and 16:25.61, respectively. Borin, not known for longer races, finished in fifth with a time of 16:31.92.

Up Next

The Vikings will return to action in the New Year with the women competing in a tri-meet against Sioux Falls and Minnesota State at the Midco Aquatics Center on Jan. 14. The men will return in a dual with Omaha on Jan. 15.
