Augustana Women’s Basketball Preps for Tilts Against Wayne State and Briar Cliff

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The Augustana women's basketball returns for its second week of games. On Tuesday, the Vikings open conference play by heading to Wayne, America, to face Wayne State. Augustana then returns to the Elmen Center for a nonconference game against Briar Cliff. Tuesday matchup is slated for a 5:30 p.m. start and Saturday's game will be played at 3 p.m.

The Wildcats

Wayne State is 2-1 early in the season and was selected 13th in the NSIC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Most recently the Wildcats split a week of games, besting Chadron State (87-50) on Thursday and falling to Black Hills State (66-50) on Friday. 

The Wildcats are led by Kylie Hammer and Lauren Zacharias, both averaging 14.3 points per game and Kassidy Pingel averaging 7.7 rebounds.

The Chargers

Briar Cliff is 4-2 early in the season with a 2-0 record in the GPAC play. The Chargers have beaten two NAIA ranked opponents so far this season, against No. 20 Olivet Nazarene and No. 9 Concordia. Most recently, Briar Cliff bested Mount Marty last Wednesday, winning 68-45. The Chargers were tabbed to finish fifth in the GPAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

The Chargers are led by Madelyn Deitchler averaging 19.5 and 8.5 rebounds per game.

The Vikings

Augustana, receiving votes in WBCA NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll, started its season going 2-0 against nonconference opponents Peru State (81-54) and Minnesota Morris (86-55). 

Over the two games, three Vikings had double-doubles. In the game against Peru State, Aislinn Duffy had 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Kenzie Rensch garnered her first career double-double in that game having 10 points and 10 steals, also a career-high and one steal shy of tying the school record.

Jennifer Aadland had her second double-double of her short career against Minnesota Morris, garnering 13 points and 12 rebounds. 

One Last Thing

Rensch is averaging 6.5 steals per game through the first two contests of the season. Her average currently ranks her first in the nation along with eighth in the nation in total steals at 13.
