Augustana Baseball Takes Series From UMary With Lopsided Game Three Victory

MANDAN, N.D. -- A rainy day, delayed start time and venue change didn't affect the Augustana baseball team at all Sunday afternoon in its 15-2 victory over the UMary Marauders in game three of the series. The series win moves the Vikings to 17-5 on the season and 13-5 within the NSIC.

Junior lefty Jed Schmidt dazzled in relief for the Vikings. He entered the ballgame in the second inning and proceeded to toss 4.2 innings of no-hit baseball with just one walk while striking out 10-of-15 batters faced. Schmidt now moves to 3-0 on the year.

Down 2-0 early, the Vikings stormed back and took the lead in the top of the third inning with a four-spot. Freshman infielder Tate Meiners started things off with a mammoth solo home run to lead off the inning, his first of the season and his career.

Junior infielder JT Mix walked and sophomore outfielder Carter Howell was hit by a pitch following the homer. Senior shortstop Sam Baier then doubled Mix home to tie the ballgame. Junior infielder Jordan Barth singled in Howell for the lead and later stole second, allowing Baier to steal home for the 4-2 lead.

In the top of the fifth, senior infielder Christian Kuzemka worked a two-out walk and junior catcher Will Olson took advantage, launching a two-run homer to left-center for a 6-2 Augustana lead. In the top of the sixth, Baier singled home Mix to push the score to 7-2.

The Vikings then erupted for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning, setting up a possible run-rule victory. After Olson walked and junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz singled, Meiners tattooed another baseball, this time, for a three-run homer over the centerfield wall to make it 10-2 Vikings.

With the rout officially on, Mix followed the homer with a single and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-2. With Howell standing on third after a hit by pitch, senior outfielder Riley Johnson standing on second after a walk and Barth standing on first after a walk, Olson came to the plate with two outs, needing just one RBI to put the run-rule into effect.

Instead, Olson launched his sixth home run of the year over the left-center field wall, a majestic grand slam that put the Vikings up 15-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, senior righty Parker Hanson took the ball from Schmidt and set the Marauders down in order, with two strikeouts, to secure the victory for the Vikings.

Overall, Olson, Meiners, Rosencranz and Baier all notched multi-hit games while Howell, Barth and Mix finished with one apiece.
