SIOUX CITY, Iowa -- The Augustana track & field teams had a breakthrough day at the oval office at the Sioux City Relays on Friday night.
In the women's 1,500m, the Vikings claimed four of the top-five spots. Patty Jo English won the event in a time of 4:31.64 with Nicolette Schmidt following close behind in 4:32.50. Callin Naddy and Cami Streff placed fourth and fifth in 4:34.93 and 4:35.82, respectively.
Both English and Schmidt's times are NCAA Provisional qualifying times and broke the Sioux City Relays meet record.
In addition, the Viking women not only took four of the top-five spots, but also claimed 11 of the top 17 finishers.
In the men's metric mile, Augustana also claimed four of the top-five spots and six of the top seven. Austin Miller, who was doubling back from the 800m, claimed victory in the 1,500m running a time of 3:52.90. Senior Alec Kray claimed runner-up in 3:53.79. Evan Johnson and Ryan Hartman took the third and fifth place, running 3:54.67 and 3:55.62, respectively.
Miller had a runner-up finish in the 800m running 1:51.08 trailing only to the NAIA 800m indoor champion, Dordt's Matthew Van Eps. His 800m time places him No. 5 on the outdoor all-time list.
Senior Selin Dikmen had herself a day with second place and third place finishes coming in the 200m and 100m hurdles. She ran times of 25.50 and 14.94, respectively.
Other top performances of the day were Sydney Mudgett's runner-up finish in the 400m in a time of 58.31, Claire Boersma placed third in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:29.11, and Mearah Miedema 5-3.50.
The Vikings return to action next week with two meets lined up in the Kip Janvrin Invite Friday in Indianola, Iowa, and Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa Friday and Saturday.
