Augustana Baseball Splits Saturday Doubleheader With Winona State

WINONA, Minn. -- The Augustana baseball team staged a dramatic last-inning comeback in game one Saturday to defeat the Winona State Warriors 6-5 before falling 5-4 in game two. The Vikings are now 23-8 overall and 19-8 within the NSIC.

Game One
Junior infielder and NSIC Preseason Player of the Year Jordan Barth played hero in game one for Augustana. Barth had two hits, scored once and drove in four on the day and came up huge in the last frame for the Vikings.

Prior to the aforementioned heroics, the Vikings struck first in the game with a solo homer off the bat of senior shortstop Sam Baier, his ninth of the season, tying him for the NSIC lead.

After the Warriors tied up the ballgame in the bottom of the second, Barth came to the plate with the bases loaded in the top of the third inning. The junior then smoked a ball through the left side of the infield, driving in two and giving Augustana a 3-1 lead. Senior infielder Christian Kuzemka, the very next hitter, doubled down the left field line to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Warriors, however, did not give up and tied the ballgame up at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning on a three-run homer off the bat of senior Sam Kohnle. After tying the game, Winona State took a one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth inning and stood three outs away from victory.

Sophomore outfielder Carter Howell walked to start the top of the seventh and moved to second base on a passed ball. With the tying run on second base, Baier moved Howell over to third with a ground ball to the second baseman.

That set the stage for Barth, who came to the plate with the tying run on third base, needing just a sacrifice fly to tie up the game and force extra innings. Barth had different plans and instead sent a towering two-run homer over the right-center field wall to erase the one-run deficit and give the Vikings a one-run lead.

Junior righty Evan Furst set the Warriors down in order in the bottom of the seventh and earned the win in the Vikings comeback victory. Furst went 1.2 and retired all five batters he faced with one strikeouts.

Junior lefty Tanner Brown started game one for Augustana and went 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts.

At the plate, Barth, Kuzemka, junior catcher Will Olson and junior infielder JT Mix all tallied multi-hit games while Baier finished with one.

Game Two
The Vikings trailed early in game two as Winona State scored four times in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on four free passes with two hits.

Baier tallied a sac fly in the top of the third inning, however the Warriors countered in the bottom half of the inning with a run and led 5-1.

Augustana chipped away and scored once in the top of the fifth after a couple of Winona State errors mixed in with a Barth single.

In the top of the seventh, the Vikings cut the deficit to just one run. Freshman infielder Max Mosser singled to start the frame followed by a Mix walk. Baier then roped an RBI single to left field to cut the score to 5-3 in favor of Winona. Mix later came around to score on an error and the Vikings trailed 5-4.

The Augustana bats, however, were held quiet in the eighth and ninth innings, preserving the 5-4 final score.

Freshman righty Caleb Kranz tossed three innings of one-run ball out of the pen and struck out four. Kranz handed the ball to senior righty Parker Hanson who pitched two scoreless frames while logging two strikeouts. Senior righty Jordan Gesling then tossed 1.1 scoreless innings before handing the ball to junior righty Thomas Bruss who threw .2 scoreless.

At the plate, Howell finished with two hits while Baier, Barth, Kuzemka, senior outfielder Riley Johnson, freshman catcher Drey Dirksen, Mosser and Mix all finished with one hit.
