No. 18 Viking Baseball Advances to NSIC Final With Thursday Split

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- After falling in its first matchup of the day to No. 13 Minnesota State 8-5, the No. 18-ranked Augustana baseball team rebounded in game two, defeating the Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston 11-3.

Game One, No. 13 Minnesota State 8 - No. 18 Augustana 5
The winner's bracket game featured a matchup of nationally-ranked opponents with the home-seeded No. 13 Mavericks coming out on top.

Minnesota State got off to a quick start, scoring three times in the top of the first and two times in the top of the second, jumping out to a 5-0 lead.

Down 5-0, the Vikings cut into the lead in the top of the fifth with back-to-back homers from senior infielder Christian Kuzemka and junior outfielder Jaxon Rosencranz. Later in the frame, junior infielder Jordan Barth doubled down the right field line, driving in a run and bringing the score to 5-3 in favor of Minnesota State.

After the Mavericks scratched a run across in the bottom of the frame, the Vikings cut the lead to just one in the top of the sixth on Kuzemka's second homer of the day, a two-run shot over the left field wall, giving him seven longballs on the season.

After cutting the deficit to one, the Viking bats were held scoreless the rest of the game while the Mavericks scored twice more in the bottom of the sixth inning, moving the game to its final score of 8-5.

Out of the bullpen, juniors Evan Furst and Jed Schmidt each logged scoreless innings of relief.

At the plate, sophomore outfielder Carter Howell and Barth each tallied three hits, Kuzemka had two and freshman infielder Max Mosser, junior catcher Will Olson, senior outfielder Riley Johnson, Rosencranz and junior infielder JT Mix all had one.

Game Two, No. 18 Augustana 11 - Minnesota Crookston 3
The Vikings flipped the script in game two and wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the bottom of the first Howell and Mosser singled to start things off. Howell then came around to score on an error and two more Vikings crossed the plate for a 3-0 lead on a double from Olson. The Vikings capped the inning off with an RBI single from Johnson for the 4-0 lead.

Down 4-0, the Golden Eagles of Minnesota Crookston scored three times in the top of the fourth, however, the Vikings countered with a three-spot, all unearned runs, in the bottom of the frame to keep their four-run advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth, Augustana extended its lead with a sacrifice fly off the bat of Johnson.

Up 8-3, the Vikings tallied another three-spot in the bottom of the seventh to take an 11-3 lead. Howell led things off with a triple to the center field wall and came around to score on an RBI single from Mosser. Mosser eventually scored on an RBI single from Kuzemka and the Vikings scored their 11th and final run of the day on a throwing error from the Crookston shortstop.

On the mound, senior lefty Koby Bishop got the win, going five innings and striking out seven. Junior lefty Tanner Brown earned the save with four scoreless innings of relief.

At the plate in game two, Mosser had three hits, Howell, Kuzemka, Johnson and Mix each had two and Olson and Rosencranz each had one.
