UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich.-- The Augustana men's swimming and diving team concluded its first GLIAC Championships with three finalists Monday. The Vikings scored 245.50 points throughout the four-day event in University Center, Michigan.
"I am really proud of our team for an outstanding championship," Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko said. "We competed at a high level and I look forward to seeing this team continue to grow."
Jackson Dircks and Aeson Akins qualified for the 'B' finals in the 200 back. Dircks placed 14th in the prelims with a time of 1:54.33 while Akins placed 15th, where he swam a time of 1:54.34. During the final, Dircks would improve his time by placing 13th with a time of 1:53.29. Akins would swim a time of 1:55.45 in the final, to score points for the VIkings.
Mason Kauffeld qualified for his fourth final of the GLIAC Championships by placing 9th in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:04.89. He improved his time in the finals to 2:04.15 to score important points for the Vikings.
In the 1,650 free, Aidan McCusker swam a personal-best time of 16:23.76 to place ninth. Not far behind was Kacper Mayerberg who also had a personal best in the event by placing 10th in 16:24.83. Also in the event was Steven Asmus as he swam a time of 16:30.80 to place 16th.
Capping off the GLIAC Championships was the 400 free relay team consisting of Evan Bell, Luis Aguilar Delgando, Pedro Borin, Lui Pinto, where they swam a time of 3:07.54. The time is a best for the relay squad, capping off the inaugural season as a team in 2021-22.
Augustana now awaits selections for the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships taking place in Greensboro, North Carolina, March 9-12. Pedro Borin has several 'B' standard times for AU in hopes of qualifying for the event.
