PITTSBURG, Kan. – The Augustana track & field teams concluded the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships with two additional All-America honors in Pittsburg, Kansas, on Saturday afternoon. In total, the Vikings leave the NCAA Indoor Championships with 10 First Team All-America accolades.
"The coaching staff is extremely proud of what this group of athletes did at the indoor nationals this weekend," director of track & field/cross country Tracy Hellman said. "To finish with a total of 10 All-Americans is a fantastic finish for our program.
"We will now reset and get ready for an exciting outdoor campaign."Â
Austin Miller had a top-three finish in the men's mile, running 4:08.96 to claim third. Miller got out to the front within the first 109 meters, then settled into the pack within the next two laps. After 1000m, he was clear of trouble in the back of the pack. Miller moved up one spot over the next 300m to put him in the eighth spot with a lap to go.
Miller, for the second day in a row, used his finishing speed to his advantage, covering the final 300m in 38.85, the fastest last lap of the field to move up five spots and take third in the race.
After the race, the first-place finisher was disqualified for an unknown reason, moving Miller to the runner-up spot.
Miller improved on his fifth-place finish in the mile last year.
In the women's mile, Patty Jo English finished in All-America fashion, placing seventh in 4:57.90. English found herself in the middle of the pack in a rather conservative race with the first full lap being 1:01.75, with English in fifth. The race began to pick up from there, with each lap being quicker than the previous.Â
She fell back to ninth place between 1009m and 1309m, a lap that she clocked in at 51.62. English continued to shift gears with her last 300m being covered in 49.55, to move her up two spots to secure a seventh-place finish.
Earlier in the day, Tyl Woelber resumed day two of the heptathlon with a 16th-place finish in the 60m hurdles earning 679 points for his 9.31 efforts.
He was unable to complete the event due to injury, ending with a point total of 3,951 points.
