BISMARCK, N.D. - The Augustana men's cross country team earned a victory at the NSIC Championships, while the women's team finished second in Bismarck, N.D., on Saturday morning.
Ryan Hartman paced the Vikings with his first career NSIC Championship, breaking the tape in a personal-best 23:51.5. It was a statement victory for Hartman, defeating the runner-up by an incredible 38.9 seconds. He becomes the sixth different Viking to win the men's NSIC race.
The Vikings also had the women's NSIC Newcomer of the Year in
Ashley Overgaauw, who finished 13th in the women's race with a personal-best time of 21:24.10, and the NSIC Coach of the year on the men's side in
Tracy Hellman.
In all, 19 Vikings reset their personal bests in the race.
"The coaching staff is very proud of our team's efforts at the NSIC Championships," said Hellman. "I've always told my teams that stepping up in championship meets are a testament to our tradition and mindset of our program. The men's team winning another team title was very exciting.
Ryan Hartman ran a tremendous race and dominated the field. He is trending in the right direction."
The No. 17-ranked men had three of the top six finishers to boost the program to victory.
Colten Brand was the highest AU finisher behind Hartman, finishing fifth with a personal-best 24:36.40.
Dawson Strom followed in sixth, closing with a time of 24:41.90, good for a personal-best of his own.
In just his second race as a Viking, freshman
Brady Hogan earned an 18th place finish in a time of 25:04.10. Rounding out the Vikings in the top 30 were
Kadin Groen and
Isaac Fink, who finished in 25:26.50 (26th) and 25:27.00 (27th) respectively.
The No. 10-ranked women opened the day with a great pack effort, as five finishers placed in the top 16, and all participants finished inside the top 40.
The pack was led by
Aubrey Surage, who finished in sixth with a personal-best 21:05.90. Right behind her was
Ella Bakken, whose personal-best 21:10.30 was good for seventh.
Behind
Ashley Overgaauw was
Ana McCabe, adding a PR at 21:30.90 to place 15th, just ahead of
Amanda Overgaauw, who closed in at 16th in 21:32.10. Tenley Nelson rounded out the finishers in the top-20, finishing 19th with a PR 21:43.50.
The top ten finishers are named All-NSIC First Team while finishers 11-20 earn All-NSIC Second Team honors.
"Our women ran a great team race but came up just short to a very good Winona team. I'm excited for our progression and momentum with both teams. The NCAA Regional is up next, and we will be ready. Overall, it was a great day to be a Viking."
