Viking Men’s Swim & Dive Breaks Four School Records on Day One of GLIAC Championships

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Augustana men's swimming & diving squad opened day one of the GLIAC Championships breaking four program records.

The first AU school record was broken in the 200 medley relay recorded by the quartet of Jackson Dircks, Mason Kauffeld, Peyton Bartsch and Xander Smith. The squad finished the relay in a time of 1:33.11, surpassing the previous record of 1:33.98. 

Bartsch and Smith recorded a second record breaking performance, joined by Isaac Rokusek and Ethan Kinney in the 200 freestyle relay. The team finished the relay with a finishing time of 1:26.24 besting the previous record of 1:26.93. 

Kauffeld continued his success in the 200 individual medley, picking up a top-16 finish in the finals, touching the wall with a time of 1:54.78. During the morning preliminaries, Kauffeld broke his own program record in the 200 IM finishing the race in a time of 1:52.93.  

Aiden McCusker picked up the same finish in the 1000 meters, recording a time of 9.43. McCuskers' finish was the fourth and final program record to be broken, surpassing the previous time by over two seconds. 

Grand Valley State leads the meet with 229.5 points. The Vikings, in their second year competing, are in seventh place with 52 points.

"We had a solid day one with the men," Augustana head coach Lindsie Micko said. "This is an extremely fast-paced meet on the men's side and I am proud of how we started."

Augustana returns to the pool tomorrow for day two of the GLIAC Championships in Holland, Michigan. Tomorrow, preliminaries begin at 9 a.m. CST, with finals starting at 4:30 p.m. CST.
