Augustana DMR Claims First Team All-America Finish at NCAA Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, V.A. – The Augustana indoor track & Field championships were highlighted by an All-America finish for the women's distance medley relay on day one of the NCAA Indoor Championships. 

"We had a great day at the NCAA Indoor Championships," said Augustana Director of Track & Field Tracy Hellman. "Highlighting the day was our All-America finish in the women's DMR. It was a great finish for the indoor season."

The quartet of Mia Salas, Maia Peterson, Caroline Sudbeck and Patty Jo English crossed the finish line in a time of 11:33.61 to claim a sixth place national finish. Salas began the race for the Vikings running the 1200 meter in a time of 3:32.61 to tack AU in eight place. Peterson raced the second leg of the relay clocking a time of 56.82 in the 400 meter bringing the Vikings up to seventh place. Sudbeck owned the third leg of the relay, racing the 600 meter in a time of 2:14.93 to claw Augustana up into sixth place. English held the Vikings steady in the final leg of the race, running the 1600 meter in a time of 4:49.27 running in a sixth place national finish. 

Henry Klitzke raced in the finals of 5000 meter run finishing 15th in the nation with a time of 15:00.00. 

Andrew Martens and Lawrence Lokonobei raced in the preliminaries of the 60 meter hurdles. Martens was just one placement away from qualifying for finals with a time of 8.02 in ninth place while Lokonobei raced in a 15th place finish clocking a time of 8.17. 

In addition to the DMR, English also raced in the preliminaries of the mile event, recording a time of 4:57.93 to finish in 20th place. On the men's side, Colten Brand joined English in the preliminaries of the mile, racing in 13th place with a time of 4:11.84. 

Sudbeck took the track outside of the DMR through racing in the 800 meter dash, clocking a time of 2:17.57 to record a 19th place finish. 

The final individual Viking to take the track was Nyanas Kur in the preliminaries of the 200 meter dash. Kur claimed a 14th place finish with a time of 24.46. 

"We had a number of athletes who were at the NCAA for the first time so this was a valuable experience," Hellman added. "We are very happy with our season and now look forward to the outdoor campaign."
