HOLLAND, Mich. –
Mason Kauffeld obliterated the Augustana school record in the 100 breaststroke as part of the Augustana swimming and diving team's third day at the GLIAC Championships. The Vikings are in seventh place with 169 points with one day to go.
Â
"We had another amazing day," Augustana head coach
Andrew Makepeace said. "Each day has gotten better with school records being shattered, 'B' cuts reached and personal record after personal record. There are a lot of performances that aren't being counted to our point tally but have been great to see.
Â
"I'm proud of what we have accomplished so far. We have another big day ahead of us. It's been fun but the job isn't done until Monday night. We are in striking distance of Davenport, so we have to swim big to give ourselves a chance in the final session."
Â
Kauffeld placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke after setting the school record in the prelims with a time of 55.17. That took .8 off the previous school record to qualify him eighth for the 'A' final. In the finals, he again lowered his school record, this time to 54.63, while hitting an NCAA 'B' cut as part of his sixth-place finish.
Â
Pedro Borin also swam in an 'A' final Sunday night as he placed eighth in the 200 fly in a time of 1:51.52. Also gaining points for AU was Bradley Infield as he placed 15
th in a time of 1:53.29.
Â
Jackson Dircks and
Aeson Akins each went below the previous school record in the 100 backstroke as Dircks garnered seven points for AU with a 10
th place finish in a time of 49.15. Akins placed 11
th, touching the wall just behind Dircks in 49.35. The previous school record was held by Dircks in a time of 50.04.
Â
The final school record to fall Sunday night was in the 800 free relay. The team of
Henry Lasher,
Matthew Pietsch,
Lui Gabriel Pinto and
Steven Asmus clocked in at 6:52.38 to place seventh.
Â
The diving squad competed for the final time of the championships as
David Binsfeld placed 11
th with 391.60 points.
Â
