SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The No. 14 Augustana wrestling team fell 22-13 to No. 1/No. 2 DIII Augsburg on Thursday night inside the Elmen Center.
The Vikings move to 12-5 overall, while the Auggies jump to 9-1.
Jaxson Rohman opened the night at 125 pounds with three first period takedowns to take command. A takedown in the second period and a takedown in the third period helped lead Rohman to a major decision and put the Vikings in front 4-0. It was his ninth major decision of the season.
Jack Huffman kept the ball rolling at 133 pounds with a pair of takedowns in a strong first period. A slow second period saw Huffman's lead cut to 6-2. He would record an escape in the third period, a crucial point that helped him hold on for a decision and bring the Viking lead to 7-0.
After a pair of losses gave the Auggies an 8-7 advantage,
Payton Handevidt got the Vikings back into the lead with a 4-2 decision. Handevidt trailed 1-0 into the third period, but an early escape and a takedown in the final minute ended up being enough to give the Vikings a 10-8 lead.
Rounding out the Augustana wins was
Max Ramberg at 197 pounds. After trailing 3-2 into the third period, Ramberg collected an escape, takedown, and riding point to punctuate a decision, bringing the Vikings within 19-13.
