Parker Swanson took home the title at 165 pounds at the Daktronics Open

Vikings place five, including one champion at Daktronics Open

BROOKINGS, S.D. – Augustana College wrestling opened the 2014-15 season at the Daktronics Open on Sunday and placed five wrestlers. Parker Swanson went 4-0 on his way to the 165-pound title to lead the Vikings.
 
Also competing in the 165-pound bracket with Swanson was Bradyn Neises. Neises went 5-1 on the day on his way to a third-place finish with his only loss coming to a Division I opponent. TJ North (125 pounds), Aero Amo (184 pounds) and Michael Lowman (285 pounds) each added fourth-place finishes for the Vikings.
 
Swanson began the day with a first round bye before he earned his first victory in a 3-0 decision over Brandon Krone of the University of Minnesota. Swanson advanced to the semifinals with a 5-0 decision over Ricards Avakovs of Minot State and entered the championship bout with a 7-2 decision over Joseph Brewster of South Dakota State.
 
Swanson took on Dustin Williams of the University of Nebraska and earned a 4-1 decision to take home the 165-pound title.
 
Neises had a first-round bye before taking on Dustin Williams of Nebraska. Williams won a 4-1 decision and Neises went on to win four straight bouts to get into the third-place match. On the way, Neises won an 11-3 major decision over U-Mary's Kyle Schultz and a medical forfeit over Minot's Avakovs.
 
Neises then earned a 3-2 decision over teammate Tim Weber before defeating Jacen Petersen of Arizona State in a 6-4 decision to get into the third-place match. Neises then squared-off with Joseph Brewster of South Dakota State and won a 3-2 decision to finished third.
 
North lost his opening match of the day, dropping a 7-3 decision to Minnesota's Steven Polakowski before reeling off four straight wins, including a pin in 2:32 over Minot State's Anthony Battle to get into the third-place bout. North squared-off with SDSU's Isaac Andrade and lost in overtime 5-3 to finish fourth.
 
Amo won an 11-2 major decision over SDSU's Joshua Casperson after earning a first-round bye. He won his quarterfinal bout by major decision as well defeating Minnesota's Christopher Pfarr 9-0. Amo wrestled his way back into the third-place match after losing a 5-2 decision to Blake Stauffer of Arizona State and eventually lost a 12-2 major decision to ASU's Kevin Radford and finished fourth overall.
 
Lowman started his day off with a pin in 1:18 over Donatra Moshi of Iowa Central before winning a 2-1 sudden victory over Arizona State's Chace Eskam. Lowman lost a 4-2 decision to North Dakota State's Evan Knutson before picking up two straight decisions to place third. In the third place bout, Lowman squared-off with Eskam of Arizona State once again and won a 5-2 decision.
 
Shawn Hatlestad finished 3-2 at 157 pounds for the Vikings and all three of his wins came by way of pins. After losing his first bout of the day Hatlestad had a bye then picked up a win by pin in 55 seconds over Iowa Central's Stephon Gray. He then picked up a win by fall in 1:22 over Dakota Wesleyan's Nick Woslum and picked up his third pin in 1:46 over North Dakota State's Cole Sladek.
 
Augustana returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Dakota Wesleyan Open in Mitchell, S.D.
