Baseball earns series sweep of Northern State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Augustana baseball earned their second consecutive four-game weekend sweep on Sunday. The Vikings picked up a 2-1 victory in game one and a 10-3 win in game two to complete the four-game sweep of Northern State. Augustana improved to 18-11 overall and 12-2 in the NSIC.

Game One
Just like game two on Saturday, game one on Sunday was won with one swing of the bat and solid pitching from the Vikings pitching staff.

Augustana's only two runs of the contest came in the first inning when Patrick O'Donnell connected with a pitch and sent it over the left-field fence for a 2-run home run that also scored Riley Johnson on the play. Johnson led off the game with a single to left field.

Northern State cut the Vikings lead in half on a double to left center but Lincoln Voss was sharp throughout and limited the damage to keep the Vikings on top.

Voss went 4.2 innings giving up just two hits and a run but got the help he needed from the bullpen. Derek Dahlke pitched two full innings for Augustana giving up just two hits while picking up one strikeout. Dalton Allen came in for the save with one out remaining in the seventh. Allen got the strikeout to end the inning and game and seal the Vikings 2-1 win in game one.

Game Two
For the second straight game, the Vikings scored in the first inning. After O'Donnell doubled to left with two outs, Ashland traded places with O'Donnell with a double of his own to left field giving the Vikings an early 1-0 advantage.
In the third inning, the Vikings increased their lead by a run when O'Donnell a home run to left making it 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth Northern State scored their first run of the game on a home run and later took a 3-2 lead on a double that scored two.

Augustana didn't trail for long as they regained the lead in the fifth. After Johnson reached base on a fielder's choice and both Carter Wevik and O'Donnell walked, Ashland stepped into the box. With one swing of the bat and his first career grand slam, Ashland gave the Vikings a 6-3 lead.

The Vikings added three more runs in the top of the seventh. Alex Beals reached on fielder's choice that scored Ashland who led off the inning with a single to left. Later in the inning, Augustana scored two more runs thanks to a Northern State error. Johnson reached base on an error by the second basemen that allowed Beals and Zach Reeg to score and make it 9-3 Vikings.

Augustana added one more run in the ninth inning to give them an even 10 for the game on a Johnson double that scored Beals. The Vikings struck out the side in order in the bottom of the ninth to walk away with a 10-3 win and a 4-game series sweep of Northern State.
