Baseball falls to Wayne State in final regular season road contest

WAYNE, Neb. - After playing the first two games of the series at home yesterday, Augustana baseball (33-18, 27-9 NSIC) and Wayne State (25-21, 20-14 NSIC) were back in Wayne, Nebraska on Saturday to conclude their weekend series. The Vikings dropped both games in Wayne, falling 8-2 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

Game One
After scoring 19 runs in game one on Friday, the Vikings were only able to score two on Saturday.

Augustana got behind early in game one after WSC hit a leadoff home run on a 0-2 pitch. Later in the inning, they increased their lead to three after a two-RBI single.

Augustana scored both of their runs in the third inning. The Viking first run of the game came when Patrick O'Donnell reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Riley Johnson to score on the play after a throwing error. The Vikings got their second run on a Lucas Barry groundout that scored Sam Baier.

Wayne State was able to hold off the Vikings hitting all game while scoring three additional runs in the third and two in the fifth to defeat the Vikings 8-2 in game one.

Viking Notables
• Augustana fell to 35-47-1 all-time against Wayne State
• The Vikings only had four hits in the game and left six runners on base

Austin Orvis pitched one and two-thirds innings and didn't allow a hit while striking out one
 

Game Two
Augustana scored first in the second game when Kris Ashland reached base on a fielding error by the Wayne State shortstop that scored Baier in the first inning.

The lead didn't last long as Wayne State was able to score two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats added two more runs in the fourth to grab a 4-1 lead while hanging on to win by the same score.

After the Vikings gave up four runs, Augustana's bullpen settled in pitching four and two-thirds innings of two-hit baseball. Ben Moran and Collin Lovell each pitched two and a third innings in the game. Moran gave up just two hits while striking out two. Lovell also pitched two and a third innings allowing no hits and striking out three.

Up Next
Augustana.will close out the 2017 regular season next weekend when the host Minnesota State for a four-game series at Karras Park, Ronken Field. The Vikings and Mavericks will play at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday, May 5 and then again at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 6. We will be honoring our 14 seniors on Saturday in between games.
